June 14, 2018 BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University Athletics program finished 64th among over 300 NCAA Division II schools in the final 2017-18 Learfield Directors' Cup standings. WWU tallied 308.00 points by the 15 varsity sport programs and was one of five schools from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference to place in the top 100 with 268 Division II programs earning points during the 2017-18 seasons.
Western had its string of placing in the top 50 in 14 consecutive years snapped, but maintained its streak of placing in the top 100 in all 20 seasons that WWU has competed at the NCAA Division II level. The Vikings placed 11th in 2016-17 and 26th in 2015-16, and had a string of seven consecutive top 20 seasons from 2007-08 through 2013-14.
Led by a runner-up finish by the women's rowing program to net 90.00 points and additional points earned by men's golf and men's & women's outdoor track & field, the Vikings recorded 145.00 points during the spring. West regional championship game appearances by the volleyball and women's soccer team led to 128.00 points in the fall and Jasmine McMullin picked up 35.00 points during the indoor track & field championships.
In its final year before full transition to NCAA Division I membership, Cal Baptist won its first Directors' Cup with a total score of 905 points. Grand Valley State, last year's Division II Directors' Cup champion, finished second with 834.75 points. Simon Fraser (30th), Alaska Anchorage (42nd), Western Oregon (48th), WWU (64th) and Central Washington (98th) were the five GNAC teams to place in the top 100.
