WWU Athletics Internship Program 

Internships within Western Washington University Athletics offer a unique opportunity to work within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletic to promote Viking Athletics. The interns act as liaisons between the Department of Athletics and various campus and community groups, faculty, staff, and local corporate sponsors. Through the process of working with these groups, the interns for Western Athletics are involved in a number of exciting events and activities in and around the campus and throughout the community. The Athletic Department internships provide students with an invaluable experience that will benefit the pursuit of a career in any field. Serving as an intern within the Western Athletic Department is a unique opportunity to be directly involved in the game day activities at Viking sporting events including basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field, rowing and soccer. These positions offered enable students to gain experience interacting face to face with a variety of people, thinking creatively, and solving problems quickly, all in a fun, professional environment.

The Western Washington University Athletic Department considers their interns a vital component in the success of the overall department. The efforts and contributions of the interns are heavily depended upon; therefore, it is essential that all interns commit to the program for the entire 2017/2018 academic year. Each of the internships offered through the Western’s athletic department are paid internships, but more importantly, Western Washington University Athletic department promises one the best hands on experience within University Athletics.

This year the marketing department is looking to fill multiple positions:

  • WWU Athletics Victor E. Viking Mascot Intern
  • WWU Athletics Blue Crew Fan Experience Intern
  • WWU Athletics Community Engagement Intern (2)
  • WWU Athletics Photography & Video Intern

Each of the Western Washington University Athletic internships requires interns to attend all sporting events throughout the year. These internships are designed for the 2017/2018 academic school year starting September 2017 and ending in June 2018. Each internship opportunity varies significantly in areas of responsibility and are further outlined below.

WWU Athletics Victor E. Viking Mascot Intern (Paid)

Details of Position:
Western Washington University Athletics Department is looking for high-spirited, imaginative, charismatic and athletic individuals who are interested in adding to the high energy level at Viking Athletics events and community events by performing as the official mascot of Western Washington University, VICTOR E. VIKING.

As Victor, you will be appearing at the majority of WWU Athletics events and numerous community events throughout the school year and summer.

When representing the Viking spirit, at any number of Viking home games, Victor plays a key role in helping to build the excitement in the stands, while always doing so in a spirited, yet classy manner.

Victor is well versed in the long-standing traditions of WWU Athletics and strives to leave lasting memories with current fans as well as building new traditions with the next generation of Vikings.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University include but not limited to:

  • Must be capable of performing athletic activities and skits in an arena atmosphere
  • Must have a basic ability to dance and carry a rhythm
  • Must demonstrate a level of imagination and creativity conducive to collegiate sports
  • Must be at ease with interaction with fans of all ages, especially children
  • Must be able to improvise and animate in costume without using speech
  • Prior working experience in a customer service related role preferred
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to balance a demanding schedule that includes working home games, nights, weekends
  • Must be a WWU Student

All candidates will be expected on average to work 1-3 events per week for the 2017/2018 academic year and must be able to work a flexible schedule where select evenings, weekends and/or days are required.

WWU Athletics Blue Crew Fan Experience Intern (Paid)

Details of Position:
This WWU Athletics intern will assist with our grassroots marketing efforts through the implementation of marketing events throughout WWU’s campus and dormitories, while getting the word out on campus is about upcoming HOME Athletic Events. This intern will participate in various stages of developing marketing programs and advertising materials/events to promote all WWU Athletics; become familiar with marketing strategies best utilized on WWU’s Campus.  Working through all on-campus avenues and areas, Associated Students, Residence life, dining services, recreation center and any untapped areas on WWU’s campus.  Will require meetings and research into dining dormitory procedures for marketing and advertising.  Also participating in EVERY HOME athletic event as a promotional fan and liaison between the athletic department and the student fan section. Communicate with dorm buildings and departments about promotion for events.  We seek to develop an enthusiastic student fan base committed to attending and supporting our sports teams through the creation, planning and implementation of exciting and effective promotional activities.  The RESULT - a wild, crazy and devoted student body.

This position requires an energetic, friendly person with strong communication skills and the ability to interact with others (fans, children, parents, etc.). In this position you will be required to be self-motivated and work independently in a fast paced environment. All Interns will present themselves at standards that represent Western Washington Athletics and have the willingness to do an abundance of tasks that come within the WWU Athletics Department. This position must be able to lift at least 25lbs in order to assist with setup and cleanup.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University include but not limited to:

  • Promote BLUE CREW AS Club sign-ups, meetings, activities, events, etc.
  • Coordinate BLUE CREW club members at all home athletic events
  • Coordinate BLUE CREW theme nights and activities throughout each home event
  • Enhance student body interest and participation in WWU Athletics
  • Develop enthusiastic student fan base committed to attending and supporting our sports teams
  • Development of master marketing calendar for the year, with dates of BLUE CREW meetings, fan experience activities, themes, special events, etc.
  • Posting weekly flyers (Dorms, Dining, VU & other on-campus avenues)
  • Posting campus poster (Dorms, Dining, VU & other on-campus avenues)
  • Approval and distribution of mailers, table tents, etc.
  • Coordination of group promotions throughout campus (teams, cheerleaders, mascot etc.)
  • Organize mass mailings/on-campus emails
  • Targeted e-mail advertising, this week in Athletics
  • Coordinate mass distribution of pocket schedules, posters, season ticket brochures and other promotional material throughout the community
  • Work directly with other WWU interns to assist in their responsibilities
  • Communicate with the AS office in all BLUE CREW activities and events
  • Ability to communicate with various leaders and workers in different departments
  • Actively communicating with RA's and RD's in campus wide dorm buildings

Blue Crew Fan Experience Coordinator (Game-Days):

  • Interact with the WWU Student’s/Fans customer base in efforts to increase awareness school spirit & support of WWU Athletic
  • Attend all WWU Athletic Home events, in stands while working directly with cultivating more WWU Athletic fans
  • Support all elements of in-game activities and entertainment while in-stand support
  • Coordinate with WWU interns, cheerleaders, band, mascot for in-crowd activities

WWU Athletics Community Engagement Intern (Paid) 

Details of Position:
This WWU Athletics intern will assist with our grassroots marketing efforts through the implementation of marketing events throughout WWU’s campus and the city of Bellingham, while getting the word out about upcoming athletic events. This intern will participate in various stages of developing marketing programs and advertising materials/events to promote all WWU Athletics; become familiar with marketing strategies best utilized on WWU’s Campus and surrounding neighborhoods.  Working through all on-campus avenues and areas, Associated Students, Residence life, dining services, recreation center and any untapped areas on WWU’s campus.  Will require meetings and research into dining dormitory procedures for marketing and advertising.  Also participating in EVERY HOME athletic event as a promotional fan and liaison between the athletic department and the student fan section. Communicate with dorm buildings and departments about promotion for events. This position will also communicate with partners about promotion for events.

All Interns will present themselves at standards that represent Western Washington Athletics and have the willingness to do an abundance of tasks that come within the WWU Athletics Department.   • Assist with coordination of all Blue Crew activities
  • Schedule, implement, and periodically suggest new community-based programs, partnerships, and other
  • engagement initiatives;
  • Work directly with other WWU interns to assist in their responsibilities
  • Ability to communicate with various leaders and workers in different departments.
  • Actively communicating with RA's and RD's in campus wide dorm buildings.

Viking Vault (Game-Days):

  • Attend all WWU Athletic Home events, in stands while working directly with cultivating WWU Athletic fans.
  • Set up and take down of Blue Crew Viking Vault
  • Distribute prize items to students on game days
  • Interact with student body and fans at athletic events

WWU Athletics Photography & Videography Intern (Paid)

Details of Position:
This is a full academic year position. Must have the proper equipment and strong grasp of sports photography and videography in order to document WWU Athletic events and conduct photo shoots for multiple athletics teams. The intern must also have the ability to efficiently manage, organize and archive photos and videos which will then be used for the athletics website, flyers, newsletters, posters, social media and many other WWU Athletics promotional materials. This position requires availability to work all home athletic events (usually between 2-5 events a week) with varying office hours depending on needs. This position requires that one must be comfortable in a fast moving environment and short deadlines, to work professionally and think creatively. An enthusiasm for athletics is encouraged.

The position holder must also be able to work independently during games; selecting, editing and uploading photos and videos that are most visually effective, both during halftime and immediately following events. The photography/video intern works closely with the social media intern and Sports Information Director to promote teams and events and is expected to produce occasional galleries, photo stories, and press release photos when needed. Engaged input on visual design and implementation of marketing/promotional pieces to best reach the WWU Athletics audience is necessary. A portfolio of previous work is required and must be turned in with cover letter and resume.

  • Strong sports photography and videography capabilities

  • Ability to evaluate varying lighting situations
  • Manage photographic library
  • Effective and efficient communication skills

  • Enthusiasm for sports / keep up to date with each team’s progress
  • Attend all athletic events

Recommended skills:

  • Lightroom (or comparable alternative)
  • Studio lighting
  • Car access
  • Ability to read soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, track and field, cross country, golf, rowing game play.
