Western Washington University Athletic Department Paid Internships

Internships within Western Washington University Athletics offer a unique opportunity to work within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletic to promote Viking Athletics. The interns act as liaisons between the Department of Athletics and various campus and community groups, faculty, staff, and local corporate sponsors. Through the process of working with these groups, the interns for Western Athletics are involved in a number of exciting events and activities in and around the campus and throughout the community. The Athletic Department internships provide students with an invaluable experience that will benefit the pursuit of a career in any field. Serving as an intern within the Western Athletic Department is a unique opportunity to be directly involved in the game day activities at Viking sporting events including basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field, rowing and soccer. These positions offered enable students to gain experience interacting face to face with a variety of people, thinking creatively, and solving problems quickly, all in a fun, professional environment.

The Western Washington University Athletic Department considers their interns a vital component in the success of the overall department. The efforts and contributions of the interns are heavily depended upon; therefore, it is essential that all interns commit to the program for the entire 2016/2017 academic year. Each of the internships offered through the Western’s athletic department are paid internships, but more importantly, Western Washington University Athletic department promises one the best hands on experience within University Athletics.

This year the marketing department is looking to fill multiple positions:

Each of the Western Washington University Athletic internships requires interns to attend all sporting events throughout the year. These internships are designed for the 2016/2017 academic school year starting September 2016 and ending in June 2017. Each internship opportunity varies significantly in areas of responsibility and are further outlined below.


Viking Game-Day Music Coordinator (Paid)

Details of Position:
Would you like a front row seat to every home Western athletic event? Do you love music? The Western Washington University Athletic Department is looking for an enthusiastic music expert to play the music during the entire 2016-2017 home athletic events. This student must have an outgoing personality and able to work well with people. We are seeking someone who has an extensive background with music and someone who can think on their feet. They must know the flow of the game and know when to play the right music at the right time. Knowledge of sound system equipment and ability to multi-task is preferred but not required. Applicants must be available for all home-sporting events (volleyball, men’s/women’s basketball).

WWU Athletics Viking Vault Fan Experience & On-Campus Outreach Intern (Paid)


Details of Position:
This WWU Athletics intern will assist with our grassroots marketing efforts through the implementation of marketing events throughout WWU’s campus and dormitories, while getting the word out on campus is about upcoming HOME Athletic Events. This intern will participate in various stages of developing marketing programs and advertising materials/events to promote all WWU Athletics; become familiar with marketing strategies best utilized on WWU’s Campus.  Working through all on-campus avenues and areas, Associated Students, Resident life, dining services, recreation center and any untapped areas on WWU’s campus.  Will require meetings and research into dining dormitory procedures for marketing and advertising.  Also participating in EVERY HOME athletic event as a promotional fan and liaison between the athletic department and the student fan section. Communicate with dorm buildings and departments about promotion for events.

This position requires an energetic, friendly person with strong communication skills and the ability to interact with others (fans, children, parents, etc.). In this position you will be required to be self-motivated and work independently in a fast paced environment. All Interns will present themselves at standards that represent Western Washington Athletics and have the willingness to do an abundance of tasks that come within the WWU Athletics Department. This position must be able to lift at least 25lbs in order to assist with set-up and clean-up.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University include but not limited to:

  • Development of master marketing calendar for the year, with dates of distribution, approvals, themes, special events, etc.
  • Posting weekly flyers (Dorms, Dinning, VU & other on-campus avenues)
  • Posting campus poster (Dorms, Dinning, VU & other on-campus avenues
  • Approval and distribution of mailers, table tents, etc.
  • Coordination of group promotions throughout campus (teams, cheerleaders, mascot etc.)
  • Organize mass mailings/on-campus emails
  • Targeted e-mail advertising, this week in Athletics
  • Coordinate mass distribution of pocket schedules, posters, season ticket brochures and other promotional material throughout the community
  • Assist with coordination of all Blue Crew activities
  • Work directly with other WWU interns to assist in their responsibilities
  • Ability to communicate with various leaders and workers in different departments.
  • Actively communicating with RA's and RD's in campus wide dorm buildings.

Viking Vault (Game-Days):

  • Attend all WWU Athletic Home events, in stands while working directly with cultivating WWU Athletic fans.
  • Set up and take down of Blue Crew Viking Vault
  • Distribute prize items to students on game days
  • Interact with student body and fans at athletic events

Contribute as an active WWU Athletics team member by:

  • Actively help with the promotions team during time outs and halftime.
  • Pre-game organizing of items needed for the promotions used in that game.
  • Post-game clean up responsibilities with promotional items and other areas as instructed.
  • Ability to help other interns with their specific jobs during games and office hours.

WWU Athletics Viking Street Squad Promotional Intern (Paid)


Details of Position:
This WWU Athletics intern will assist with our grassroots marketing efforts through the implementation of marketing events throughout WWU’s campus focused on all athletics. In addition to managing promotional efforts, intern will enter the market to interact with the WWU Student’s/Fans customer base in efforts to increase awareness school spirit & support of Western Athletic Sports. Getting the word out on campus is about upcoming HOME Athletic Events and Activities. The intern will also help further establish the brand of the VIKING STREET SQUAD, which takes pride in supporting all sports, which was established in the Fall of 2015.

This intern will participate in ALL stages of developing marketing programs and advertising materials/events to promote WWU Athletics; become familiar with marketing strategies best utilized on WWU’s Campus and directly related to lesser attended events. Working through all on-campus avenues and areas, Associated Students, Resident life, dining services, Recreation Center and any untapped areas on WWU’s campus. Will require meetings and research into AS procedures, dining and rec center procedures for marketing and advertising. Communicate with dorm buildings and departments about promotion for events. Also working through all off-campus avenues, in the community. Youth and family organizations, groups, clubs, other outreach opportunity within the local community. Also participating in ALL NECESSARY HOME athletic events as a promotional fan and liaison between the athletic department and the student fan section.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University include but not limited to:

  • Continue to educate student body and community about VIKING STREET SQUAD
  • Plan and implement the promotions and game-day activities for necessary HOME events
  • Develop a promotional/advertising plan for necessary HOME athletic events
  • Develop a group nights/theme nights/promotional giveaway for each Home athletic event.
  • Development of master marketing calendar for the year, with dates of distribution, approvals, themes, special events, etc.
  • Maintain a budget and order swag items to give away at necessary athletics HOME events through VIKING STREET SQUAD
  • Maintain a social media presence on the Viking Street Squad Instagram and live tweeting games for various teams (if needed)   
  • Communicate with local community to coordinate group’s to attend games
  • Posting weekly flyers (Dorms, Dining, VU & other on-campus avenues)
  • Posting campus poster (Dorms, Dining, VU & other on-campus avenues)

WWU Athletics Game-Day Sports / Events Photography Intern (Paid)

Details of Position:
This is a full academic year position. Must have the proper equipment and strong grasp of sports photography in order to document WWU Athletic events and conduct photo shoots for multiple athletics teams. The intern must also have the ability to efficiently manage, organize and archive photos which will then be used for the athletics website, flyers, newsletters, posters, social media and many other WWU Athletics promotional materials. This position requires availability to work all home athletic events (usually between 2-5 events a week) with varying office hours depending on needs. This position requires that one must be comfortable in a fast moving environment and short deadlines, to work professionally and think creatively. An enthusiasm for athletics is encouraged. The position holder must also be able to work independently during games; selecting, editing and uploading photos that are most visually effective, both during halftime and immediately following events. The photography intern works closely with the social media intern and Sports Information Director to promote teams and events and is expected to produce occasional galleries, photo stories, and press release photos when needed. Engaged input on visual design and implementation of marketing/promotional pieces to best reach the WWU Athletics audience is necessary. A portfolio of previous work is required and must be turned in with cover letter and resume.

WWU Athletics Game-Day Marketing Coordinator (Paid)

Details of Position:
Game Day Interns will present themselves at standards that represent Western Washington Athletics. Interns must be able to lift at least 25 lbs. This is a three quarter position with a heavy focus in the Fall and Winter quarters. This position requires availability to work all home athletic events. Office hours will vary on what work needs to be done or if you are asked to come in. The position holder may be asked to work more or less hours then previously listed depending on needs in the office or during busy game day weeks.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University include but not limited to:

  • Game/event presentation (Setting up of foyer, gates)
    • Foyer and Gates presented in an entertaining and organized manner
    • Having promotional materials readily available such as, but not limited to:
      • Posters
      • Pocket Schedules
      • Poms
      • Beads
      • Balloons
      • Themed Materials (Senior Night, Pink Night, etc.)
  • Planning and execution of in game promotions/activities
    • Help Improve atmosphere through the use of games, giveaways, contests, trivia, music, videos, graphics, etc.
    • Plan half-time talent & national anthem performers
    • Plan and executing all in-game promotions (i.e. T-shirt toss, shooting contests, prize distribution  . . .)
    • Coordination between multiple performing groups including but not limited to:
      • Cheerleaders

Victor E. Viking the Official Mascot of WWU Athletics (Paid)

Details of Position:
Western Washington University Athletics Department is looking for high-spirited, imaginative, charismatic and athletic individuals who are interested in adding to the high energy level at Viking Athletics events and community events by performing as the official mascot of Western Washington University, VICTOR E. VIKING. Victor is the official mascot of the Western Washington University, appearing at the majority of WWU Athletics events and numerous community events throughout the school year and summer. When representing the Viking spirit, at any number of Viking home games, Victor plays a key role in helping to build the excitement in the stands, while always doing so in a spirited, yet classy manner. Victor is well versed in the long-standing traditions of WWU Athletics and strives to leave lasting memories with current fans as well as building new traditions with the next generation of Vikings.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University include but not limited to:

  • Must be capable of performing athletic activities and skits in an arena atmosphere
  • Must have a basic ability to dance and carry a rhythm
  • Must demonstrate a level of imagination and creativity conducive to collegiate sports
  • Must be at ease with interaction with fans of all ages, especially children
  • Must be able to improvise and animate in costume without using speech
  • Prior working experience in a customer service related role preferred
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to balance a demanding schedule that includes working home games, nights, weekends

WWU Athletics On-Campus Promotion & Special Events Intern (Paid)

Details of Position:
Western Washington University Department of Athletics is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of WWU Athletics On-Campus Promotion & Special Events Intern. This position will help perform, plan and coordinate special events. These events will be focused to on-campus events hosted by the WWU Athletics. This position will perform various tasks related to special events planning, set-up and assist with each event to ensure that each event runs smoothly and represents the highest quality of Western Athletics.  The On-Campus Promotions & Special Events Intern assists the Athletic Department in planning and implementing events for all on-campus marketing for every HOME WWU Athletic event/game.  This position includes coordinations of resident hall, dorm, mascot, cheerleaders, athletes appearances to help promote upcoming WWU Home Athletic events.

This intern will participate in ALL stages of developing marketing programs and advertising materials/events to promote WWU Athletics; become familiar with marketing strategies best utilized on WWU’s Campus and directly related to improve attendance at all HOME WWU Athletic events. Working through all on-campus avenues and areas, Associated Students, Residence life, dining services, Recreation Center and any untapped areas on WWU’s campus. Will require meetings and research into AS procedures, dining and rec center procedures for marketing and advertising. Communicate with dorm buildings and departments about promotion for events.

This candidate must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.  Must be detail oriented and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.  Must have excellent writing skills and strong communication skills.  Must be flexible with hours/schedule and willing to work on various projects as needed.  Must have ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University include but not limited to:

  • Developing master special event calendar, weekly table (depending on WWU Athletics home events).
  • Tabling and coordination of other WWU Interns, mascot, cheerleaders and WWU Athletes to help promote all upcoming Home games/events.
  • Coordinating and planning of appropriate times, schedules, and how to continue to promote throughout the year using prizes, advertisings, visual reminders and special events on a weekly basis.
  • Developing, giveaways, flyers and other exciting activities to promote WWU Athletic Home event and planning to hit  all areas of campus in a person to person advertising/promoting.
  • Areas of focus would be Campus Rec. Center, Viking Union, Vendor's row as well as RED-Square.  Additional areas on-campus, when researched where, when and how best to promote.
  • In addition to special events, planning – researching other – ON-CAMPUS or even off campus special events, clubs, concerts, etc. to giveaway tickets to upcoming HOME games (raffles, door prizes, fundraisers any giveaways).
  • Weekly WWU HOME GAME ticket giveaways to different colleges, groups, clubs, staff members, etc.  (by student athletes, cheer, mascot etc.)
  • Other responsibility will be to plan mascot appearance schedule – with on-campus special events (planned by WWU Athletics) as well as off campus activities to participate in, parades, youth events, on-campus events, etc.

WWU Athletics Viking Graphic Design Internship Intern (paid)

Details of Position:
This is a three quarter position with a heavy focus in the fall and winter quarters. This position work varies upon independent work done from either the provided work offices or home. Game Days are on average four hours of work time. Office hours vary on what work needs to be done or if you are asked to come in. The position holder may be asked to work more or less hours than previously listed depending on needs in the office or during busy game day weeks. It is a paid internship with a set paycheck every two weeks.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University include but not limited to:

  • Posting weekly promotional posters
  • Coordination of group promotions throughout campus
  • Proficient in Adobe In-Design, Photoshop, and or Illustrator  (if not required to take Adobe In-Design basic skills seminar – free for all WWU Students)
  • Coordinate mass distribution of pocket schedules, posters, season ticket brochures and other promotional material throughout campus and the community
  • Assist in creation and design of sports posters, autograph pages, Jr. Viking material, Blue Crew materials, T-Shirts, Signs for Cheerleaders and other items to help in promoting Western Athletics
  • Attend weekly communication and strategy meetings with Director Of Marketing, Asst. Marketing Director and Sports Information Director and other marketing interns
  • Assist with coordination of all Blue Crew activities
  • Work directly with other WWU interns to assist in their responsibilities; especially with home athletic events
  • Assist with responsibilities at all home athletic events including facilitating promotions at time-outs and halftime activities
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned
