Western Washington University Athletic Department Internship Program

Internships within Western Washington University Athletics offer a unique opportunity to work within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletic to promote Viking Athletics. The interns act as liaisons between the Department of Athletics and various campus and community groups, faculty, staff, and local corporate sponsors. Through the process of working with these groups, the interns for Western Athletics are involved in a number of exciting events and activities in and around the campus and throughout the community. The Athletic Department internships provide students with an invaluable experience that will benefit the pursuit of a career in any field. Serving as an intern within the Western Athletic Department is a unique opportunity to be directly involved in the game day activities at Viking sporting events including basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field, rowing and soccer. These positions offered enable students to gain experience interacting face to face with a variety of people, thinking creatively, and solving problems quickly, all in a fun, professional environment.

The Western Washington University Athletic Department considers their interns a vital component in the success of the overall department. The efforts and contributions of the interns are heavily depended upon; therefore, it is essential that all interns commit to the program for the entire 2015/2016 academic year. Each of the internships offered through the Western's athletic department are paid internships, but more importantly, Western Washington University Athletic department promises one the best hands on experience within University Athletics.

This year the marketing department is looking to fill multiple positions: Viking Game-Day Music, Viking Crew Intern, Game-Day Sports/Events Photography Intern, Social Media Intern, Campus Advertising/Liaison Intern, Women's Sports Marketing/Promotions Intern. Each of the Western Washington University Athletic internships requires interns to attend all sporting events throughout the year. These internships are designed for the 2015/2016 academic school year starting September 2015 and ending in June 2016. Each internship opportunity varies significantly in areas of responsibility and are further outlined below.

Viking Game-Day Music / Sound Position

Details of Position:
Would you like a front row seat to every home Western athletic event? Do you love music? The Western Washington University Athletic Department is looking for an enthusiastic music expert to play the music during the entire 2015-2016 home athletic events. This student must have an outgoing personality and able to work well with people. We are seeking someone who has an extensive background with music and someone who can think on their feet. They must know the flow of the game and know when to play the right music at the right time. Knowledge of sound system equipment and ability to multi-task is preferred but not required. Applicants must be available for all home-sporting events (volleyball, men's/women's basketball).

Viking Crew Intern

Details of Position:
This position requires an energetic, friendly person with strong communication skills and the ability to interact with others (fans, children, parents, etc.). In this position you will be required to be self-motivated and work independently in a fast paced environment. The Viking Crew Intern will present themselves at standards that represent Western Washington Athletics and have the willingness to do an abundance of tasks that come within the WWU Athletics Department. This position must be able to lift at least 25lbs in order to assist with set-up and clean-up.

Contribute as an active WWU Athletics team member by:

  • Assist with pre-game organizing
  • Assist with post game clean up responsibilities with promotional items and other areas as instructed.
  • Ability to help other interns with their specific jobs during games
  • Ability to self-motivate and being friendly in a close work environment
  • Interact with student body and fans at athletic events
  • Display a friendly, positive attitude towards all fans

Viking Vault:

  • Set up and take down of Blue Crew Viking Vault
  • Distribute prize items to students on game days
  • Interact with student body and fans at athletic events
  • Display a friendly, positive attitude towards all fans

Game-Day Sports / Events Photography Coordinator

Details of Position:
This is a full academic year position. Photographer photographs varsity athletics home game and events. The pictures produced are used for post-game press releases on WWUVikings.com as well for flyers, newsletters, posters, social media and many other WWU Athletics promotional materials. Intern provides their own photographic equipment; a laptop with Photo Mechanic and Photoshop is available. The camera and lens selection must be able to photographic in Sam Carver Gymnasium and under stadium lights on a soccer field. The intern will occasionally do photo shoots with the varsity athletic teams and the cheer squad for promotions. This position requires availability to work all home athletic events with varying office hours depending on needs. A portfolio of previous works is required and must be turned in with cover letter and resume.

Required skills:

  • Work independently
  • Shoot and edit on deadline
  • Ability to evaluate varying lighting situations
  • Manage photographic library
  • Promote/report with pictures and captions on Twitter & Facebook
  • Photoshop

Social Media Intern

Details of Position:
This is a three quarter position with a heavy focus in the fall and winter quarters. This position work varies upon independent work done from either the provided work offices or home. Game Days are on average four hours of work time. Office hours vary on what work needs to be done or if you are asked to come in. This position holder will be the voice for WWU Athletics on all social media platforms.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University Social Media Intern include but not limited to:

Promoting and updating Western Washington University Athletic events:

  • Actively promote athletic events on all social media platforms
  • Actively use social media to live post through out all WWU Athletics events
  • Understanding of athletics event game flows for appropriately timed posts
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to constantly improve social media tactics
  • Ability to communicate with various leaders and workers in different departments to post on social media
  • Organizational skills to make timely and appropriate posts
  • Ability to recognize social media tactics that are effective
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Ability to analyze social media data into actionable information

Contribute as an active WWU Athletics Intern team member by:

Campus Advertising/Liaison Intern

Details of Position
This WWU Athletics intern will assist with our grassroots marketing efforts through the implementation of marketing events throughout the WWU's campus. In addition to managing promotional efforts, intern will enter the market to interact with the WWU Student's/Fans customer base in efforts to increase awareness school spirit & support of WWU Athletic event. Getting the word out on campus is about upcoming HOME Athletic Events. This intern will participate in various stages of developing marketing programs and advertising materials/events to promote all WWU Athletics; become familiar with marketing strategies best utilized on WWU's Campus. Working through all on-campus avenues and areas, Associated Students, Resident life, dining services, recreation center and any untapped areas on WWU's campus. Will require meetings and research into AS procedures, dining and rec center procedures for marketing and advertising. Also participating in EVERY HOME athletic event as a promotional fan and liaison between the athletic department and the student fan section. Communicate with dorm buildings and departments about promotion for events.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University Social Media Intern include but not limited to:

  • Development of master marketing calendar for the year, with dates of distribution, approvals, themes, special events, etc.
  • Posting weekly flyers (Dorms, Dinning, VU & other on-campus avenues)
  • Posting campus poster (Dorms, Dinning, VU & other on-campus avenues)
  • Approval and distribution of mailers, table tents, etc.
  • Coordination of group promotions throughout campus (teams, cheerleaders, mascot etc.)
  • Organize mass mailings/on-campus emails
  • AS Poster distribution for all home athletic events
  • Targeted e-mail advertising, this week in Athletics
  • Coordinate mass distribution of pocket schedules, posters, season ticket brochures and other promotional material throughout the community
  • Assist with coordination of all Blue Crew activities
  • Work directly with other WWU interns to assist in their responsibilities
  • Attend all WWU Athletic Home events, in stands while working directly with cultivating WWU Athletic fans.
  • Ability to communicate with various leaders and workers in different departments.
  • Actively communicating with RA's and RD's in campus wide dorm buildings.
  • Ability to self-motivate and being friendly in a close work environment.
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Women' Sports Marketing/Promotions Intern

Details of Position

Getting the word out on campus is about upcoming WOMEN'S HOME Athletic Events and Activities.
This intern will participate in ALL stages of developing marketing programs and advertising materials/events to promote WWU Volleyball and Women's Basketball Programs; become familiar with marketing strategies best utilized on WWU's Campus and directly related to women's college sports. Working through all on-campus avenues and areas, Associated Students, Resident life, dining services, Recreation Center and any untapped areas on WWU's campus. Will require meetings and research into AS procedures, dining and rec center procedures for marketing and advertising. Communicate with dorm buildings and departments about promotion for events. Also working through all off-campus avenues, in the community. Youth and family organizations, groups, clubs, other outreach opportunity within the local community. Also participating in ALL Volleyball and W. Basketball HOME athletic event as a promotional fan and liaison between the athletic department and the student fan section.

  • Plan and implement the promotions and game-day activities for Home Volleyball and W. Basketball games
  • Develop a promotional/advertising plan for all HOME Volleyball & W. Basketball games
  • Develop a group nights/theme nights/promotional giveaway for each Home athletic event.
