Western Washington University Athletic Department Internship Program

About the Department

Internships within Western Washington University Athletics offer a unique opportunity to work within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletic to promote Viking Athletics. The interns act as liaisons between the Department of Athletics and various campus and community groups, faculty, staff, and local corporate sponsors. Through the process of working with these groups, the interns for Western Athletics are involved in a number of exciting events and activities in and around the campus and throughout the community. The Athletic Department internships provide students with an invaluable experience that will benefit the pursuit of a career in any field. Serving as an intern within the Western Athletic Department is a unique opportunity to be directly involved in the game day activities at Viking sporting events including basketball, volleyball, softball, and soccer. These positions offered enable students to gain experience interacting face to face with a variety of people, thinking creatively, and solving problems quickly, all in a fun, professional environment.

The Western Washington University Athletic Department considers their interns a vital component in the success of the overall department. The efforts and contributions of the interns are heavily depended upon; therefore, it is essential that all interns commit to the program for the entire 2010/2011 academic year. Each of the internships offered through the Western's athletic department are paid internships, but more importantly, Western Washington University Athletic department promises one the best hands on experience within University Athletics.

This year the marketing department is looking to fill multiple positions: Viking Sports Game-Day Entertainer Intern, Viking Sports Campus Advertising Intern, Social Media/Campus Liaison Intern, and Game-Day Sports/Events Photography Intern. Other available positions include: Viking Game day Music/Sound Position, and Victor E. Viking Mascot Position. Each of the Western Washington University Athletic internships requires interns to attend all sporting events throughout the year. These internships are designed for the 2013/2014 academic school year starting September 2013 and ending in June 2014. Each internship opportunity varies significantly in areas of responsibility and are further outlined below.


Viking Sports Game-Day Entertainer Intern

Details of Position

This is a three quarter position with a heavy focus in the Fall and Winter quarters. This position works about 15-20 hours a week. Game Days are on average four hours of work time. Office hours will vary on what work needs to be done or if you are asked to come in. The position holder may be asked to work more or less hours then previously listed depending on needs in the office or during busy game day weeks. It is a paid internship with a set paycheck every two weeks.

Primary responsibilities for Western Washington University Junior Viking Intern include:

Contribute as an active WWU Athletics Intern team member by:

  • Actively help with the promotions team during time outs and half time.
  • Assist with pre-game organizing of items needed for the promotions used in that game.
  • Assist with post game clean up responsibilities with promotional items and other areas as instructed.
  • Ability to help other interns with their specific jobs during games and office hours.
  • Ability to self-motivate and being friendly in a close work environment

Game Day Responsibilities

  • Organize promotional plan for all home athletic events
  • Coordination of all in-game programming & scripting
  • Organize half-time talent & national anthem performers
  • Executing all in-game promotions  (i.e. T-shirt toss, shooting contests, field goal kick, prize distribution  . . .)
  • Coordinate team mascot appearances and game day activities
  • Assist with execution of all sponsorship in-game/pre-game activities
  • Distributing premium items to fans
  • Coordination all Blue Crew activities
  • Implementing special promotions for WWU students
  • Work directly with other WWU interns to assist in their responsibilities
  • Assist WWU Athletic marketing staff with various projects involving research and design
  • Other responsibilities assigned

Viking Sports Campus Advertising Intern

Details of Position:
This is a three quarter position with a heavy focus in the fall and winter quarters. This position work varies upon independent work done from either the provided work offices or home. Game Days are on average four hours of work time. Office hours vary on what work needs to be done or if you are asked to come in. The position holder may be asked to work more or less hours then previously listed depending on needs in the office or during busy game day weeks. It is a paid internship with a set paycheck every two weeks.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University Sports Campus Advertising Intern include but not limited to:

  • Posting weekly promotional posters
  • Coordination of group promotions throughout campus
  • Proficient in Adobe In-Design, Photoshop, and or Illustrator  (if not required to take Adobe In-Design basic skills seminar - free for all WWU Students)
  • Coordinate mass distribution of pocket schedules, posters, season ticket brochures and other promotional material throughout campus and the community
  • Assist in creation and design of sports posters, autograph pages, Jr. Viking material, Blue Crew materials, T-Shirts, Signs for Cheerleaders and other items to help in promoting Western Athletics
  • Attend weekly communication and strategy meetings with Director Of Marketing, Asst. Marketing Director and Sports Information Director and other marketing interns
  • Develop ideas to enhance WWU Athletics social media presence
  • Monitor trends in social media tools and appropriately apply that knowledge to increasing the use of social media.
  • Assist with coordination of all Blue Crew activities
  • Work directly with other WWU interns to assist in their responsibilities; especially with home athletic events
  • Assist with responsibilities at all home athletic events including facilitating promotions at time-outs and half-time activities
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Social Media / Campus Liaison Intern

Details of Position:
This is a three quarter position with a heavy focus in the fall and winter quarters. This position work varies upon independent work done from either the provided work offices or home. Game Days are on average four hours of work time. Office hours vary on what work needs to be done or if you are asked to come in. The position holder may be asked to work more or less hours then previously listed depending on needs in the office or during busy game day weeks. It is a paid internship with a set paycheck every two weeks.

Primary Responsibilities for Western Washington University Social Media Intern include but not limited to:
Actively promote and update Western Washington University Athletic events:

  • Actively promote athletic events on Facebook.
  • Communicate with dorm buildings and departments about promotion for events.
  • Ability to communicate with various leaders and workers in different departments.
  • Actively communicating with RA's and RD's in campus wide dorm buildings.

Contribute as an active WWU Athletics Intern team member by:

  • Actively help with the promotions team during time outs and half time.
  • Assist with pre-game organizing of items needed for the promotions used in that game.
  • Assist with post game clean up responsibilities with promotional items and other areas as instructed.
  • Ability to help other interns with their specific jobs during games and office hours.
  • Ability to self-motivate and being friendly in a close work environment.

Blue Crew/Promotions Intern

Details of Position
This is a three quarter position with a heavy focus in the fall and winter quarters. This position requires availability to work all home athletic events with varying office hours depending on needs. In this position you will be required to be self-motivated and work independently in a fast paced environment. The Viking Vault frequently experiences long lines requiring the position holder to be able to effectively distribute prize material while displaying a positive attitude and passion for sports. The Blue Crew/Promotions Intern acts as a liaison between the athletic department and the student body and in order to uphold a positive image of WWU athletics, the position holder must be personable with strong communication skills.

Primary responsibilities for Western Washington University Blue Crew/Promotions Intern:

Contribute as an active WWU Athletics Intern team member by:

  • Actively help with the promotions team during time outs, half time, and second half for basketball games.
  • Assist with pre-game organizing of promotional material.
  • Assist with post game clean up responsibilities as instructed.
  • Ability to help other interns with specific jobs during games and office hours.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work in a fast paced team oriented environment.

Viking Vault:

  • Set up and take down of Blue Crew Viking Vault
  • Distribute prize items to students on game days
  • Interact with student body and fans at athletic events
  • Display a friendly, positive attitude towards all fans
  • Interact with corporate sponsors

Game-Day Sports / Events Photography Intern

Details of Position:
This is a three quarter or a full academic year position. It is paid per event; scheduled events will vary throughout the year. Must have ability to manage and organize photos which will then be used for the athletics website, flyers, newsletters, etc. Must also be available or have flexible hours during the week and throughout the year. This position requires that one must be comfortable in a fast moving environment and work place. An enthusiasm for athletics is encouraged. The position holder must also be able to work independently during games. A portfolio of previous works is required and must be turned in with cover letter and resume.


Viking Game-Day Music / Sound Position

Details of Position:
Would you like a front row seat to every home Western athletic event? Do you love music? The Western Washington University Athletic Department is looking for an enthusiastic music expert to play the music during the entire 2013-2014 home athletic events. This student must have an outgoing personality and able to work well with people. We are seeking someone who has an extensive background with music and someone who can think on their feet. They must know the flow of the game and know when to play the right music at the right time. Knowledge of sound system equipment and ability to multi-task is preferred but not required. Applicants must be available for all home sporting events (volleyball, men's/women's basketball).


Victor E. Viking Mascot Position

Details of Position:
This is a three quarter or academic year position. It is paid per event; scheduled events will vary throughout the year. This position requires an energetic, friendly person with strong communication skills and the ability to interact with others (fans, children, parents, etc.) Ability to analyze and interpret common social expressions and people's needs or wants relating to the mascot. A flexible schedule is very important due to the fact that hours during events will vary. Being physically fit, active and athletic is important because of the weight of the suits and possible long durations that you will be in the suit. This position entails being Victor-E-Viking (the main mascot) and Thor. Interest in Western Athletics is highly encouraged due to the fact that this position requires you to be a face and representative our Western Athletics.
