WWU Relay Teams Post Program Top-10 Times at Husky Classic

Feb. 10, 2018

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University track & field program closed out the Husky Classic on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor with the Vikings 4x400m relay teams each running program top-10 times on their respective lists.

The Husky Classic, featuring a competitive field and numerous NCAA Division I schools, concluded Saturday with the UW Open to follow on Sunday at Dempsey Indoor. The Vikings had two relay teams and three student-athletes on the men’s side in action during Saturday’s competition. A larger contingent of WWU student-athletes are set to compete on Sunday with a total of 75 entries for the Vikings.

The WWU women’s 4x400m relay team of senior Deja Svastisalee (Spokane, WA/North Central), junior Savannah Smith (Renton, WA), freshman Isabella Foos (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) and sophomore Emily Sytsma (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian/Concordia) crossed the line in 3:57.88 for 13th place among a field of 16 placing teams. The time ranks No. 6 on the WWU indoor top-10 list and is the best 4x400m relay time for the Vikings this season.

The men’s 4x400m relay team also posted the 6th-best time on the WWU top 10 list as freshman Bryant Welch (Burien, WA/Mount Rainier), junior Reid Lovercamp (Wenatchee, WA), sophomore Cordell Cummings (Arlington, WA) and freshman Wyatt Longley (Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge) ran a time of 3:21.99 (7th) in a field of seven teams. The time is the best WWU 4x400m relay time during the season.

Cummings and sophomore Aaron Bosscher (Lynden, WA/Cornerstone Christian) competed in the 60m hurdles preliminaries on Saturday as well with Cummings finishing 13th (8.65) and Bosscher placing 22nd (8.98) in a field of 24 placers. The personal-best 60m hurdles time for Cummings of 8.46, set at the Cougar Indoor last weekend, ranks as the top time in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference during the season.

Senior Ryan McArthur (Lynnwood, WA) placed 23rd in the 400m (50.43) with a season-best time.

Sytsma and sophomore Hannah Bradley (Bellingham, WA) had recorded program top-10 times in the 200m during the first day of competition on Friday for the Vikings. Bradley finished 22nd (25.96, 7th on WWU top 10) while Sytsma placed 23rd (26.02, 9th on WWU top 10).

The UW Open is scheduled to begin at 9 am on Sunday. A live results link and FloTrack live stream (subscription required) link can be found on the UW meet information page. After the UW Open the Vikings will prepare for the GNAC Championships next weekend (Feb. 16-17), hosted by Northwest Nazarene University at Jacksons Indoor Complex in Nampa, Idaho.
