WWU's Siler wins women's 400 for third time at GNAC Championships
Feb. 18, 2012 NAMPA, Id. - Western Washington University's Eleanor Siler (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) became a three-time league champion in the women's 400 meters as she won that event Saturday at the eight-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at Jackson's Track. The Vikings placed second in the women's division with 97-1/2 points, and they were third in the men's division with 110 points. Seattle Pacific took the women's title for the ninth straight year with 182 points, and Western Oregon was the men's champion for the fifth consecutive season with 142-1/2 points, Central Washington placing second with 122. Siler was clocked in 56.70, bettering her NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying time by .60 seconds. The GNAC 400 champion in both 2009 and 2010, she sat out last season. The Vikings' Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley) improved her PNQ mark by five inches while placing second in the women's triple jump with a mark of 38-7. It took a GNAC record to beat her, Western Oregon's Ashley Potter going 39-7. On Friday, Warman finished second in the women's long jump with a leap of 18-7 3/4. WWU's Alex Tilley (Sr., Edmonds/Kamiak) placed second in the men's 60 with a 7.04 clocking and teammate Mark Pangilinan (So., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) was third in 7.05. Tilley entered the event as the defending champion. Two other runner-up finishes by the Vikings were Michael Hoffman (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome) in the men's weight throw (52-9 1/4) and Cal Rosenberg (Jr., Portland, OR/Grant) in the men's pole vault (14-11). Also placing third for WWU were Katelyn Steen (Fr., Sammamish/Eastlake) in the women's mile (5:16.52) and both the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams. The men's quartet had a school record time of 3:20.71. It was made up of Tilley, Otto Schmidt (So., Friday Harbor), Jason Nokes (Jr., Spokane/Mount Spokane) and Jon Poolman (R-Fr., Langley/South Whidbey). Running for the women, who were clocked in 3:58.17, were Siler, Alex McDonald (Jr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck), Sydney Coffey (So., Boulder, CO/Niwot), and Valle Ledtke (Jr., Skamokawa, WA/Wahkiakum). On Friday, WWU's Karis Anderson tied a school record as she was second in the women's pole vault, clearing 12-5 1/2. Logan Myers (Fr., Olympia/Capital) and Brett Watson (Fr., Ferndale) placed one-two in the men's high jump, both clearing 6-8. Also finishing second were both of WWU's distance medley relays, the men in 10:06.80 and the women in 12:26.09. GNAC Indoor: Worthen Breaks 100-Point BarrierAli Worthen of Seattle Pacific won the 60 hurdles Saturday in Day 2 of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field championship meet in Nampa. Worthen's win in a time of 8.75 was her second on the meet and the sixth of her career tying the GNAC all-time record for individual wins currently shared by Krissy Tandle of Central Wshington (2005-07, 2009) and Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific (2007-10). She also finished second in the high jump (5-7 1/4), third in the 200 meters (25.51) and fifth in the triple jump (37-7 1/4) to earn 38 total points increasing her career total to 110. She is the first athlete - female or male - to produce 100 or more career points in the GNAC indoor championships. Joy Warrington and Maurus Hope, both of Northwest Nazarene, joined Worthen as a two-event winners. Warrington won the shot put and weight throw and Hope swept the men's 200 and 400 in times of 21.91 and 48.85. Hope's 400 time was one of four meet records set Saturday. Also setting meet records were Barak Watson in the men's 5,000, Nate Johnson of Seattle Pacific in the men's heptathlon, Ashley Potter of Western Oregon in the women's triple jump and Katie Pelchar of WOU in the high jump. Eleanor Siler of Western Washington and Nate Seely of Seattle Pacific each became three-time winners in their events. Siler added a 400 meter title to the ones she won in 2009 and 2010, while Seely won his third straight men's 800 title. Five athletes won their second titles in the same event - Bryan Mack of Central Washington in the 60 (2009), Hope in the 400 (2009), Johnson in the heptathlon (2011), Potter in the triple jump (2010) and Warrington in the shot put (2010).
