Western takes double dual meet with Puget Sound and Seattle Pacific

TACOMA, Wash. - Western Washington University's Lauren Briehof (So., Vancouver/Mountain View) had a NCAA Division II national provisional qualifying time in winning the women's 10,000 meters and Callie Muri (Fr., Billings, MT/Billings West) took both the women's long and triple jump events and ran a leg on the victorious 4x100 relay as the Vikings opened their outdoor season by winning a double dual track and field meet with host University of Puget Sound and Seattle Pacific University on Saturday at Baker Stadium. Briehof had a 36:58.82 clocking in the 10,000, being victorious by well over three minutes. Muri had winning marks of 16-1/2 in the long jump and 34-4 in the triple jump, while running the third leg on the 4x100 relay that won in 50.65. Making up the rest of that quartet were Lydia Eckles (Fr., Seattle/Roosevelt), Melissa Foss (Fr., Shelton/Peninsula) and Devon King (Fr., East Wenatchee/Eastmont). "We got a lot of nerves out of the way today," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell (22nd year). "That was a great accomplishment to have a provisional time on such a cold and windy day." Western set two meet records, Ben Dekock (So., Seabeck/Klahowya) leading a 1-2-3 finish in the men's javelin with a throw of 180-0 and the men's 4x100 relay winning in 42.83. That foursome included Augustine Agyei (Jr., Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill), Jogy Miura (Sr., Seattle/Seattle Prep), Shane Gruger (So., Shoreline/Shorewood) and Alex Tilley (Fr., Edmonds/Kamiak) Tilley also won the 100 in 10.93 and was second in the 200 in 22.96. Rachael Johnson (So., Yakima/West Valley) led a 1-2-3 Western finish in the women's 400 edging Courtney Olsen (Jr., Bellingham/Squalicum), by .01 of a second, 1:01.11 to 1:01.12. Andrew Gray (Fr., Sammamish/Skyline) paced a 1-2-3 sweep of the 110 hurdles with a clocking of 15.79. Other event winners for the Vikings were Michelle Howe (So., Arlington/Lakewood) in the women's 100 hurdles (15.12), Clara Cook (Sr., Wenatchee) in the women's high jump (5-2 1/4), Amanda DiEnno (Jr., Gig Harbor) in the women's pole vault (10-8 1/4), Kevin Myhre (Sr., Edmonds/Meadowdale) in the men's 400 hurdles (57.88), Josh Larson (So., Bellingham) in the men's high jump (6-0), Josh Winters (So., Bothell) in the men's pole vault (13-5) and the 4x400 relay (3:35.63). Western's Megan Zukowski (So., Maple Valley/Tahoma) placed second in both the women's 100 (12.44) and 200 (26.43). The Vikings return to Baker Stadium on Saturday, March 14, to compete in the UPS Joe Peyton Invitational. |
