TACOMA, Wash. - Dominating the field events, Western Washington University won both the men's and women's titles at the 20th annual University of Puget Sound J.D. Shotwell Invitational Track and Field meet Saturday at Baker Stadium.
It was the third straight crown for the Viking men, who also took top honors for the second consecutive week as they also won at their own Ralph Vernacchia Team Classic. In the nine-team field, Western finished with 175 points, followed by Pacific Lutheran 160 and Puget Sound 148.
The Western women won for the second time in three years, leading an eight-team field with 193-1/2 points. Pacific Lutheran was second (142) and Puget Sound third (103).
"It was kind of a down week for us as we were trying out people in different events and resting people," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "But overall things went well and it was a confidence boost."
