SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University's Katelyn Steen (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake) was a NCAA Division II provisional national qualifier in her third event this season, winning the women's 1,500 meters with a time of 4:34.98 on Saturday at the University of Washington Husky Open Track and Field meet held at the UW Outdoor Track Facility.
"It was a good day for us," said WWU head coach Pee Wee Halsell (27th year). "The weather cooperated and we had some good doubles."
Earlier this year, Steen was a provisional qualifier in the 5,000 (16:59.03) and 3,000 steeplechase (10:54.78). She also set a school record of 6:56.78 in the 2,000 steeplechase.
Two other provisional qualifiers for the Vikings were Alex Donigian (Jr., Mission Viejo, CA/Trabucco Hills), who broke his own school record in winning the men's 100 with a time of 10.49, and Cheyenna Pinley (Jr., Bellingham/Squalicum) in the women's pole vault as she cleared 11-10 to place fifth.
Bettering his PNQ mark and his school record in the men's discus was Frank Catelli (So., Sequim) with a winning effort of 173-11. Catelli also won the shot put with a mark of 56-1/2.
Logan Myers (Jr., Olympia/Capital) tied his PNQ time as he placed second in the men's 110 hurdles with a 14.65 clocking.
WWU's Tanya Bjornsson (Sr., Ferndale) won the women's long jump with a leap of 18-4 1/2 and ran a leg on the 4x100 relay that won in 48.70.
Other event winners for the Vikings were Katelyn Wright (So., Washougal) in the women's high jump (5-3 1/4), Lindsay Wells (Sr., Seattle/Nathan Hale) in the women's hammer (170-6), Isaac Griffith (So., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) in the men's 5,000 (14:58.84) and Andrew Wise (Fr., Denver, CO/East) in the 3,000 men's steeplechase (9:54.08).
On Friday, WWU's Slater Hirst (Jr., Shoreline/Kings) improved on his provisional mark in the men's javelin with a throw of 204-7 to place second. Teammate John Haskin (Fr., Bainbridge Island/Bainbridge) was third at 186-05, less than a foot short of the PNQ mark.
The Vikings will compete in a number of meets next week, including the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational, Azusa Pacific Invitational, Cal State Long Beach Invitational and Central Washington Invitational.
