WWU Earns Team Titles at SMU Jay Hammer Meet

LACEY, Wash. – The Western Washington University track & field program earned a pair of team wins for the second consecutive meet with a total of six event titles on Saturday at the Saint Martin’s University Jay Hammer Meet, hosted at the SMU Track & Field Complex.

Battling rainy conditions throughout the day, the WWU women placed 1st of 19 teams with 143 points, ahead of Concordia (107 points) in 2nd and Seattle Pacific (105 points) in 3rd. The WWU men totaled 172 points to place 1st of 17 teams, ahead of Central Washington (96.5 points) in 2nd and Concordia (86 points) in 3rd. The Vikings were one of five Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools competing on Saturday as part of the large meet with over 500 student-athletes.

The Vikings took home team titles for the second consecutive week after also earning team victories at the WWU Team Invitational in Bellingham on April 6.

In all, the WWU women claimed three event wins and 12 top-3 finishes, including four program top-10 marks, while the men posted three event wins as well with 16 top-3 finishes.

Freshman Shawnee Konrad (Mead, WA/Mount Spokane) was 1st of 25 in the 800m in a personal-best time of 2:21.48 with sophomores Aundrea Koger (Osage City, KS) and Waverly Shreffler (Sequim, WA) also among the top-5 placers. Koger was 4th in 2:22.78 (personal-best time) and Shreffler placed 5th in 2:23.28.

Junior Maddie Taylor (Seattle, WA/Auburn Mountainview/Montana) won the high jump, clearing 1.61m (5-3 ¼) to finish 1st of 15 placers.

Sophomore Jewels Oliquiano (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) led a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault for the Vikings at a height of 3.19m (10-5 ½). Freshman Hannah Dodson (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) and junior Rachael Roberts (Woodinville, WA/Bellevue College) tied for 2nd at a height of 3.04m (9-11 ¾).

Juniors Savannah Smith (Renton, WA) and Emily Sytsma (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian/Concordia) both ran personal-best 200m times ranking among the program top-10, with Smith placed 2nd (25.32) and Sytsma 3rd (25.50). Smith bettered her previous top time of 25.39, remaining 5th on the top-10 list while Sytsma broke into the top 10 at No. 9 with her time recorded Saturday. Freshman Emily Greene (Spokane, WA/Lewis & Clark) was 5th in the 200m with at time of 26.06.

The 200m times for Smith and Sytsma both rank among the top-8 times in the conference this season with Smith 6th and Sytsma 8th.

Sophomore Chanelle Eddy (Bellingham, WA/Sehome/Whitworth) finished 2nd in the shot put with a mark of 12.48m (40-11 ½) in recording the No. 6 shot put mark on the WWU top-10 list and the No. 8 mark in the GNAC this season. She also placed 2nd in the discus (40.28m/132-2) while freshman Kiana Schwendeman (Bonney Lake, WA) followed with a 4th-place discus finish at a distance of 37.63m (123-5).

Schwendman added a program top-10 mark in the hammer, finishing 5th with a throw of 47.85m (157-0) to move from 6th to 4th on the top-10 list. Her effort is the 9th-best throw in the GNAC during the season.

Freshman Natalie Vetto (Kirkland, WA/Lake Washington) led WWU in the javelin with a 4th-place finish (40.34m/132-4).

On the track, freshman Claire Hansen (Federal Way, WA/Todd Beamer) was 2nd in the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.96 (No. 6 time in GNAC during 2018) while freshman Molly House (Auburn, WA/Auburn Mountainvew) had a 2nd-place finish in the 400m hurdles (1:07.82).

In the 100m, Smith was 3rd in 12.55 while sophomore Kelsey McLean (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) finished 6th (12.74). Smith’s time ranks No. 7 in the GNAC this season.

Freshman Isabella Foos (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) took 4th in the 400m, crossing the line in 1:01.47. Freshman Tovah Swartz-Ireland (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) placed 2nd in the mixed 10,000m with a time of 39:11.94.

On the men’s side, sophomore Cordell Cummings (Arlington, WA) was 1st of 18 in the 400m hurdles with a winning time of 55.94. Junior Reid Lovercamp (Wenatchee, WA) was also among the top-3 placers in 3rd (57.17).

Junior Kyler Sager (Snohomish, WA/Everett CC) finished 1st of 34 in in the 1,500m with a personal-best time of 3:57.60. He was followed by freshman Ian Fay (Duvall, WA/Cedarcrest) in 2nd (4:00.32) and junior Logan Giese (Spokane, WA/Central Valley) in 4th (4:02.90).

Freshman Bryce Bryant-Leat (Spokane, WA/Lewis and Clark) was 1st of 21 placers in the shot put with a mark of 14.94m (49-0 ¼).

In other throwing events, senior Brandon Pless (Sedro-Woolley, WA) posted top-3 finishes in the hammer (52.80m, 173-3 – 2nd) and discus (41.79m/137-1 – 3rd). His hammer throw ranks No. 7 among top GNAC marks this season.

Freshman Ben Malquist (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) was 5th in both the shot put (13.68m/44-10 ¾) and discus (39.70m/130-3) while freshman Avery Lux (Fort Collins, CO/Fossil Ridge) was 4th in the hammer throw with a toss of 49.55m (162-7).

In the javelin, junior Alex Barry (Sequim, WA) finished 2nd with a throw of 57.61m (189-0), followed by freshman Cooper McNatt (Camas, WA)) in 3rd with mark of 52.40m (171-11).

Junior Tupre Wickliff (Vancouver, WA/Evergreen/Clark College) was 2nd in the high jump at a height of 1.93m (6-4) and freshman Garrett Davies (Vancouver, WA/Mountain View) placed in a tie for 4th (1.83m, 6-0).  

On the track, freshman Bryant Welch (Burien, WA/Mount Rainier) led 10 Vikings in the 100m with a 4th-place finish in 11.04. Junior Daniel Jones (Ferndale, WA) led four Vikings in the 200m with a 5th-place finish in 22.24 while freshman Myles Smith (Puyallup, WA) was 4th in the 400m (50.91 – personal-best time).

Freshman Macauley Franks (Lake Forest Park, WA/Shorecrest) led a 2-3-4 finish for WWU in the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:57.34, followed by junior James Jasperson (Lacey, WA/North Thurston/Everett CC) in 3rd (1:57.67 – personal-best time) and sophomore Enrique Gomez (Seattle, WA/Franklin) in 4th (1:59.27).

Sophomore Aaron Bosscher (Lynden, WA/Cornerstone Christian) was 4th in the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.76, the No. 8 time in the conference this year, and freshman Ben Jacot (Tacoma, WA/Curtis) had a 2nd-place finish in the 5,000m with a time of 15:20.56. Freshman Porter McMichael (Richland, WA/Hanford) posted a 3rd-place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:56.28.

Both WWU men’s relay teams placed 3rd, with the 4x100m relay team of Cummings, freshman Sonny Chhim (Kelso, WA), freshman Jordan Wallace (Seattle, WA/Cleveland), and Lovercamp recording a time of 43.23. In the 4x400m relay, Fay, Gomez, Jasperson and freshman Jesse Wiley (Parkdale, OR/Hood River Valley) finished in 3:35.81.

Next up for the Vikings is a trip to California for three meets spanning April 19-21. WWU will compete at the Brian Clay Invitational (April (19-20 - Azusa, California), Mt. Sac Relays/California Invitational Combined Events (April 19-20, Torrance, California) and Beach Invitational (April 20-21, Long Beach, California). Coming up at the following week is the 37th Annual WWU Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet at Civic Stadium in Bellingham on April 28.
