Three NCAA II provisional qualifiers for WWU at Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, Calif. - Three Western Washington University track and field athletes, Shane Gruger (Sr., Shoreline/Shorewood), Katelyn Steen (Fr., Sammamish/Eastlake) and Brett Watson (Fr., Ferndale), posted NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks Friday at the fourth annual Bryan Clay Invitational held at Cougar Stadium on the campus of host Azusa Pacific University. The meet had over 1,300 competitors from 130 colleges and universities. Two Vikings, Michael Hoffman (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome) and Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley), improved their PNQs. Hoffman was the only WWU athlete to compete at the 54th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. He had a mark of 197-1 (60.08 meters) in the men's hammer, almost a foot better than his previous best this spring. At the Bryan Clay meet, Steen won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:57.61, bettering the provisional standard by over 12 seconds. Warman also placed first, topping her season best qualifying mark in the women's triple jump by over a foot, going 40-5 (12.32) in setting school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference records. Watson (Fr., Ferndale) tied for second in the men's high jump, matching the provisional standard at 6-8 3/4 (2.05). Gruger bested the qualifying mark in the men's long jump by 3-1/2 inches, finishing fourth with at 23-8 (7.21). WWU's Karis Anderson (Jr., Seattle/Roosevelt) won the women's pole vault, clearing 11-11 3/4, and Cheyenna Pinley (Fr., Bellingham/Squalicum) tied for sixth at 11-5 3/4. Also sixth was Katie Reichert (Fr., Kelso) in the women's javelin (136-3). Hoffman finished fifth in the discus (154-2) and Emily Walters (So., Olympia) was seventh in the women's long jump (37-10 1/2). Michelle Howe (Sr., Lakewood) placed seventh (14.59) in the women's 100 hurdles and 11th in the 400 hurdles (1:03.53), and Eleanor Siler (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) was eighth in the women's 400 (56.57). They also ran legs on the Vikings' winning 4x100 relay (48.77) and the 4x400 relay (4:01.49) that was seventh. Eric Brill (Sr., Kent/Kentwood) was eighth (9:26.83) in the men's 3,000 steeplechase and Jon Poolman (Fr., Langley/South Whidbey) 10th in the men's 400 (48.66). Poolman ran the anchor leg on the 4x400 relay, which was sixth in 3:19.56. |
