May 4, 2010
NAMPA, Id. - Western Washington University's Alex Harrison (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had a huge second day in winning the decathlon and Tim Clendaniel (So., Bothell) placed seventh for the Vikings at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi-Events Championships that ended Tuesday at the Northwest Nazarene University campus track. "Alex had an excellent second day," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell (23rd year) of Harrison, who is just the second Viking decathlete to take the GNAC title. The other was Josh Freeman in 2005. "Right from the start, he did what he had to do. This is the most competitive GNAC decathlon I've seen since I've been here." Harrison, who was fifth after the first five events Monday, set two meet records in taking the title with 6,474 points. His performance along with Clendaniel's top eight finish with a personal-best 5,674 points earned Western 13 points for the GNAC Track and Field Championships which continue next weekend (May 14-15) at Monmouth, Ore. Harrison, who finished 301 points ahead of runner-up Eric Zwiefelhofer of Northwest Nazarene, had the best marks Tuesday in the discus (128-2) and javelin (197-10), setting a meet record and posting a NCAA Division II national provisional qualifying mark in the latter event. He also had a personal best of 15.91 in the 110-meter hurdles. On Monday, Harrison set a meet record in the shot put (46-1 1/2). Western's Kevin Iverson (Sr., Mill Creek/Jackson) finished ninth with 5,379 points and Derek Hartwigsen (Fr., Kent/Kentwood) was 10th with a personal-best 5,364 points. In the heptathlon, the Vikings' Sarah Daigneault (Fr., Seattle/Shoreline Christian) placed ninth with 3,710 points. Seattle Pacific's Crystal Sims easily won with 4,769 points to outdistance Raquel Gonzales of Central Washington who finished second with 4,327 points.
