WWU Competes at Ken Shannon Invite, Oregon Twilight

SEATTLE, Wash. & EUGENE, Ore. - The Western Washington University track & field program competed at two locations on Friday with senior Gordie Kordas recording an NCAA Division II provisional-qualifying pole vault and outdoor personal-best performance to place 3rd at the Oregon Twilight Meet while senior Bethany Drake finished 2nd in the javelin at the Ken Shannon Invitational. 

Kordas (Blaine, WA) cleared 4.80m/15-9 at the Oregon Twilight Meet, hosted by the University of Oregon at Hayward Field. His mark ranks in a tie for 6th on the WWU top 10 list as an NCAA Division II provisional-qualifying height. Kordas bettered his previous outdoor personal-best height of 4.76m/15-7.25 set last season and came close to his indoor personal-best mark of 4.81m/15-9.25 set during the 2017 indoor season.

Senior Jacob Hino (Yakima, WA/Eisenhower) followed in 4th place with a height of 4.50m/14-9 and junior Adam Thomas (Washougal, WA) also cleared 4.50m/14-9 and tied for 5th.

Drake (Sandy, OR) placed 2nd of 11 in the javelin on Friday at the Ken Shannon Invitational, hosted at the University of Washington's Husky Track, with a throw of 47.14m/154-8 as the top NCAA Division II placer in the field. Her season-best throw of 50.72m/166-5, an NCAA Division II automatic-qualifying mark set last Saturday in Bellingham at the 36th Annual Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet, ranks No. 2 nationally at the NCAA Division II level during the current season. Drake is a two-time javelin All-American and the 2014 national champion.

The Vikings had only four student-athletes competing Friday, but return to action Saturday with more student-athletes competing at the second day of the Ken Shannon Invitational. The first field event of the day will be the women's long jump at 10 am while the track events begin with the women's 3,000m steeplechase at 11 am. Live results will be available.
