Viking women set two meet records to open GNAC Championships
May 11, 2012
MONMOUTH, Ore. - Two Western Washington University women, Karis Anderson (Jr., Seattle/Roosevelt) and Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley), won events with meet record marks Friday in opening-day action involving nine schools at the 11th Annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at McArthur Stadium. Anderson cleared 12-6 3/4 in the pole vault and Warman leaped 19-1 1/2 in the long jump. Warman competes in the triple jump Saturday, entering with a conference record mark of 40-5. After seven finals in both divisions, WWU holds an 81-1/2 to 55 advantage in the men's competition over second-place Central Washington. In the women's competition, the Vikings are third (53) behind defending champion Seattle Pacific (64) and Alaska Anchorage (61). "I believe we're in position to have a good shot at the men's title," said WWU coach Pee Wee Halsell (25th year), whose men won league championships in 2005 and 2010. "We're about where we thought we'd be." A third event winner Friday for the Vikings was Michael Hoffman (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome) in the men's discus with a mark of 160-9. On Saturday he goes for his third straight victory in the hammer. Placing second for WWU were Dak Riek (Jr., Everett/Mariner) in the men's 10,000 meters with a season-best time of 31:01.02, and Brett Watson (Fr., Ferndale) in the men's high jump (6-7). Finishing third for the Vikings were Ryan Macdonald (R-Fr., Bellingham/Sehome) in the men's shot put (50-1 3/4), Shane Gruger (Sr., Shoreline/Shorewood) in the men's long jump (22-11) and Katelyn Steen (Fr., Sammamish/Eastlake) in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, lowering her provisional national qualifying time to 10:50.32. Eleanor Siler (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) improved her PNQ in the women's 400 with the top preliminary heat time of 55.86. The Vikings' Michelle Howe reached the PNQ standard as she was second in the women's 100 hurdle prelims with a 14.38 clocking. WWU's Alex Tilley (Sr., Edmonds/Kamiak) had the best prelim time in the men's 100 (10.81) and the second-best effort in the 200 (21.89). The Viking men got off to a good start when Alex Harrison (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) won the decathlon 10 days ago at Ellensburg with a meet record point total. He also took the GNAC decathlon in 2010. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
