Track & Field to Open Indoor Season at UW Preview

Jan. 12, 2018

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The 2018 Western Washington University indoor track & field schedule begins Saturday as the Vikings travel to the UW Preview, hosted by the University of Washington at the Dempsey Indoor facility.

The Vikings will make their first of five trips to Dempsey Indoor on Saturday with additional trips to the facility for the UW Invitational (Jan. 26-27), UW FloTrack Classic (Feb. 9-10), UW Open (Feb. 11) and SPU Final Qualifier (Feb. 24). Also on the indoor schedule for WWU is the Cougar Indoor (Feb. 2-3) at Washington State University.

The GNAC Indoor Championships are set for Feb. 16-17 hosted by Northwest Nazarene University at the Jacksons Indoor Complex in Nampa, Idaho. The SPU Final Qualifier follows the conference meet, held before the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 9-10 in Pittsburg, Kan.

The UW Preview begins with both track and field events starting at 9 am on Saturday. The last scheduled events of the day are the 4x400 meter relay races at 5:45 pm and 6:05 pm. Live results will be available, along with FloTrack live video (subscription required).

During 2017, the WWU women placed 6th at the GNAC Championships while the men finished 7th. The women added 17 top-10 entries to the record book and set a pair of school records, while the men added one school record and 10 entries to the top-10 WWU record book last year.

On the women’s side, two Vikings earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-West Region honors and three received All-GNAC honors with top three finishes at the conference championships last year. Two of the three have graduated while defending GNAC indoor pole vault champion and 2017 indoor All-American Anna Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur) is scheduled to redshirt the 2018 indoor season.

Senior Jasmine McMullin (Sequim, WA) returns for her final indoor season after redshirting last year. She was the GNAC indoor triple jump champion in 2015 and 2016, netting All-America honors in 2016 with an 11th-place finish in the triple jump at the national championships.

Five WWU men earned USTFCCCA All-West Region honors last season, but four do not return during the 2018 indoor season. Senior Somit Chhim (Kelso, WA) is scheduled to redshirt the 2018 indoor season after netting All-GNAC and All-Region honors last year.

Junior J.T. Konrad (Mead, WA/Mount Spokane) redshirted last season but returns in 2018 after placed 2nd in the pole vault at the 2016 GNAC Indoor Championships, earning All-Region honors during the season as well.

“I look for the indoor season to be good,” 31st-year head coach Pee Wee Halsell said. “We’re going to be a little bit thin on the national level, Jasmine McMullin in the triple jump would be my top hope there. But with national qualifiers you never know, it seems like somebody always rises to the top so that’s going to be fun to watch.”

In addition to the returners, which include 11 women and five men with at least one WWU program top-10 mark in 2017, the Vikings also welcome an incoming class of approximately 50 student-athletes joining the WWU track & field program in 2018.

“The offseason prep has gone well, we’ve been getting the new young people adjusted, and they seem to be adjusting well,” Halsell said. “We’ve had a good fall, I’ve had my full coaching staff and no changes there so that’s good. I think they’re as ready as they can be right now, and the weather now (for practicing outdoors) is better than it was this time last year.”

With the exception of the third week of January, WWU will compete each weekend of the indoor season leading up to the GNAC Championships on Feb. 16-17. The outdoor season starts on March 3, a week before the NCAA Indoor Championships.

“For indoor, I think it’ll come and by the second week of February is where we tend to see good things happening,” Halsell said of anticipated WWU performances during the indoor season. “And then to the outdoor season, I think we’ll just springboard into it when we get to April, and some good things will happen. I look for some of that during late March and early April, for things to truly be clicking.”

Coming Up: WWU will return to the University of Washington Jan. 26-27 for the UW Invitational before heading across the state the following weekend for Cougar Indoor (Feb. 2-3) at Washington State University.
