Jan. 29, 2009
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University is sending 11 athletes to compete in the University of Washington Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Dempsey Indoor on the UW campus.
Participating on Friday are five Viking women. They include Lauren Briehof (So., Vancouver/Mountain View) in the 5,000 meters and a distance medley relay composed of Rachael Johnson (So., Yakima/West Valley), Ellie Siler (Fr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark), Courtney Olsen (Jr., Bellingham/Squalicum) and Sarah Porter (So., Hockinson)
Siler already has broken the school standard in the 200 (26.01) and ran a leg on a school record-setting 4x400 relay (4:01.18). Briehof, Olsen and Porter helped the Western women place 10th nationally in cross country last fall. Porter, who set a school record in the 3,000 (9:47.86) this winter, competed nationally as a freshman in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
Six Vikings are competing Saturday - Emily Warman (Fr., Sedro-Woolley) in the women's long jump and triple jump, Ryan Brown (So., Bellingham/Squalicum) in the men's pole vault, Christy Miller (Sr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) in the women's pole vault, Augustine Agyei (Jr., Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill) in the men's 60-meters, and Jordan Welling (So., Burlington/Burlington-Edison) and Bennett Grimes (Jr., Pocatello, ID/Century) in the men's 3,000.
Brown, Miller and Warman have all reached the NCAA Division II national provisional standard in their respective events. Miller leads the nation in the women's pole vault, clearing 12-5 1/2, and Warman's long jump mark of 18-7 3/4 was a school record. Brown has gone 15-7 1/4 in the men's pole vault.
Grimes and Welling led the Western men to a 10th place national finish last fall, both earning All-America recognition.
