McMullin Travels to Indoor Championships, Outdoor Season Continues at PLU Open

March 8, 2018

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University track & field program will be in action at two locations on Saturday as senior Jasmine McMullin will compete in the triple jump at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships while the Vikings will also continue the outdoor schedule at the Pacific Lutheran University Open for the second outdoor meet of the season.

McMullin (Sr., Sequim, WA) is scheduled to compete in the triple jump at 1:30 pm PT/3:30 pm CT. Entering Saturday, she has the 5th-best leap among the championships field with a Great Northwest Athletic Conference and school record jump of 12.68m (41-7 ¼).

The record mark for McMullin came while earning her third GNAC indoor triple jump title. She was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet and awarded the Women's Performance of the Meet at the GNAC Indoor Championships, winning conference titles in the triple jump and long jump.

McMullin will be competing at the indoor national championships for the second time in her career after placing 11th in the triple jump at the 2016 national championships. She earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Second Team All-America honors in 2016 before redshirting during the 2017 indoor season. Earlier this season she was one of eight Vikings honored as a USTFCCCA All-West Region performer, earning the distinction in the triple jump and long jump.

The NCAA Division II Indoor Championships will be held at the Robert W. Plaster Center on March 9-10 in Pittsburg, Kansas. Pittsburg State University and the Crawford County Convention & Visitors Bureau are serving as co-hosts. The national championships website features a live results link, schedule link, competitor lists, start lists and more.

In the last USTFCCCA regional polls prior to the indoor championships, the WWU men and women are each ranked No. 9 in their respective West Region polls.

The PLU Open is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am on Saturday at the PLU Track & Field Facility in Tacoma, Washington. The Vikings return to the Tacoma area for a second consecutive weekend after beginning the outdoor season with the University of Puget Sound Ed Boitano Invitational last Saturday.

WWU recorded four NCAA II provisional-qualifying marks and added three marks to the WWU outdoor top-10 lists during the season opener at UPS last Saturday. In team scoring, the WWU men and women each placed 2nd.

Three javelin throwers, two on the women's side and one on the men's side, recorded provisional qualifiers last Saturday. Sophomore Raquel Pellecer (Sandy, OR/Portland State) and freshman Natalie Vetto (Kirkland, WA/Lake Washington) tied for 1st in the javelin with marks of 43.42m (142-5). Pellecer was named the GNAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Monday. Her 2nd-best throw was further than Vetto's in helping determine a tiebreaker for the honor.

Junior Spencer Claeys (Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap/Olympic College) finished 3rd in the javelin (63.05m/206-10) with a provisional-qualifying mark as well. Senior Anna Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur) won the pole vault with a provisional qualifier of 3.75m (12-3 ½).

The javelin mark for Claeys ranked No. 5 on the WWU top-10 list and No. 13 on the GNAC list. The Vikings also added program top-10 marks last weekend with senior Alexandra Laiblin (Oak Harbor, WA) placing 2nd in the 10,000m in a personal-best time of 37:16.26 (No. 5 WWU top-10 list) and sophomore Chanelle Eddy (Bellingham, WA/Sehome/Whitworth) placing 2nd in the discus with a personal-best mark of 41.00m (134-6) to rank No. 9 on the WWU top-10 list.

Pellecer and Vetto are two of eight javelin throwers on the women's side in NCAA Division II to post provisional-qualifying marks during the young outdoor season while Paradee is one of two pole vaulters nationally to have a provisional qualifier at this point. Claeys is one of four javelin throwers on the men's side with a provisional-qualifying mark nationally.

The following weekend, WWU will be in four locations over a two-day span with the San Francisco State Distance Carnival (March 30-31, Hayward, CA), Stanford Invitational (March 30-31, Stanford, CA) UBC Open (March 30-31, Vancouver, BC) and UPS Shotwell Invitational (March 31, Tacoma, WA).
