BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Eight Western Washington University athletes, led by national champion men's pole vaulter Ryan Brown (Jr., Bellingham/Squalicum), have been named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America team announced today. They were selected as a result of a top-eight finish at last weekend's NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

Besides Brown, the Vikings recognized were Sarah Brownell (Jr., Yelm), Michelle Howe (Jr., Lakewood), Rachael Johnson (Jr., Yakima/West Valley), Megan O'Connell (Jr., Sammamish/Skyline), Courtney Olsen (Sr., Bellingham/Squalicum), Sarah Porter (Jr., Hockinson) and Ellie Siler (So., Spokane/Lewis & Clark).

Brown, who earlier received USTFCCCA West Region Male Field Athlete of the Year honors for the second straight season, won the pole vault by clearing 16-11 (5.16 meters).

O'Connell and Porter were both recognized in two events.

Porter placed fourth in the women's 5,000 meters (17:26.05) and ran the final leg on a distance medley relay (12:02.32) that finished seventh.

O'Connell ran on both the distance medley relay and the 4x400 relay that placed fourth in a school-record time of 3:48.67. Also on the 4x400 quartet were Siler, Howe and Brownell. Completing the distance medley foursome were Olsen and Johnson.

It is the second straight year that Johnson and Porter have received indoor All-America recognition. Porter finished sixth in the 5,000 in 2009 and Johnson placed seventh in the 800.

In the national indoor team standings, Western tied for 14th in the men's division with 10 points and the Vikings tied for 16th in the women's division with 12 points.
