WINSTON-SALEM, NC -
Western Washington University's Frank Catelli (So. Sequim) placed 17th in the men's shot put in final-day action Saturday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships held on the JDL Fast Track.
Catelli's best effort was 52-4 1/2. He entered the competition ninth nationally with a school-record mark of 57-5 1/2.
"Frank was disappointed, but this was his first trip to nationals and he will be back," said WWU coach Pee Wee Halsell.
Earlier in the week, Catelli was named the USTFCCCA West Region Field Athlete of the Year.
Four Vikings competed Friday. They were led by Tanya Bjornsson (So., Ferndale), who finished ninth in the women's long jump with a mark of 18-7. That was just 1/4-inch shy of a top eight performance and All-America honors.
Cheyenna Pinley (Jr., Bellingham/Squalicum), who was making her second straight national appearance, placed 15th in the women's pole vault. She cleared 11-7 3/4.
Failing to reach the finals were Chip Jackson (Sr., Shoreline/Shorewood) in the men's mile and Alex Donigian (Jr., Mission Viejo, CA/Trabuco Hills) in the men's 60 meters. Jackson placed 13th in his heat with a time of 4:16.56. Donigian was 14th in 6.86.
