Paradee Named USTFCCCA First Team All-American

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior pole vaulter Anna Paradee has been named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) First Team All-American following her 7th-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships last Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

USTFCCCA First All-America honors are earned by placing within the top 8 of an event at the national championships. Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur) is the 4th WWU pole vaulter to earn First Team All-America honors during the indoor season, joining Karis Anderson (5th – 2012), Christy Miller (4th – 2009) and Danielle Juarez (5th – 2004).

Paradee set the indoor school record and tied the Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor record mark by clearing 3.92m (12-10 ¼) last Friday in Birmingham, Ala. She broke the previous school record of 3.90m (12-9 ½) set by Anderson in 2012.

Paradee shares the GNAC record with McKenna Emmert of Central Washington, who also cleared 3.92m (12-10 ¼) at the national championships last Friday. Both surpassed the previous record height of 3.91m (12-10) held by Alison Silva of Northwest Nazarene and set in 2014.

The GNAC pole vaulters tied with Anna Massa of Wheeling Jesuit and Brittany Kallenberger of Central Missouri last Friday, with each competitor clearing 3.92m (12-10 ¼). Based on a fewer missed heights tiebreaker, Massa and Emmert tied for 4th while Kallenberger placed 6th and Paradee placed 7th.

Paradee had entered the national championships with a personal-best height of 3.83m (12-6 ¾) before her record-setting effort last Friday. She is the defending GNAC outdoor pole vault champion after winning the title at the at the conference meet last season and also claimed the 2017 GNAC indoor pole vault title at the conference meet in February.

The Vikings return to competition with the outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open in Portland, Ore. The throwers competing Friday at Clackamas Community College and the remainder of the team on Saturday at Eldon Fix Track at Griswold Stadium on the Lewis & Clark campus.
