SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University's Lindsay Wells (Sr., Seattle/Nathan Hale) bettered the school record she set last year and improved her provisional national qualifying mark with a winning effort of 171-1 in the women's hammer at the Club Northwest Spring Break Open on Saturday at West Seattle Stadium.
Wells' throw was five inches better than her school record toss in 2013, and five feet, nine inches longer than her PNQ effort of a week ago.
One other Viking met a provisional qualifying standard. Katelyn Steen (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake) won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:54.78.
In all, WWU had 17 event winners, nine men and eight women.
Two Vikings won a pair of events. Frank Catelli (So., Sequim) took the men's shot put (54-2 3/4) and discus (153-3), and Nate van Tuinen (So., Yakima/Riverside Christian) won the men's long jump (21-4 1/4) and ran a leg on the first-place 4x100 relay (43.37).
WWU entered the meet with its men ranked No.10 and women No.11 in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Outdoor Track Polls.
The Vikings next compete at the University of Puget Sound J.D. Shotwell Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 5, at Tacoma.
