BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Central Washington University's Manny Melo holds a 127-point lead in the decathlon and just 103 points separate the top six competitors in the heptathlon following first-day action Friday at the Western Washington University Multi-Events meet being held at Civic Stadium.

Final-day competition begins at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Melo had the best effort in four of Friday's five decathlon events, running the 100 meters in 11.67, leaping 21-2 1/4 in the long jump, posting a mark of 38-10 1/2 in the shot put and clearing 5-8 in the high jump. He ended the day with a time of 54.76, fourth best, in the 400.

Central holds down the top four spots as Melo is followed by Brandon Roddewig (3,052), Andrew Venema (2,974) and Colin Alexander (2,901).

Saturday's events are the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500.

Central's Tayler Fettig tops the heptahlon standings with a four-event point total of 2,535.

Just 41 points behind Fettig is Western's Brooklyn Holton (Jr., Arlington) at 2,494. Unattached Meghan Palesch is third (2,487) followed by the Vikings' Michelle Howe (Sr., Lakewood) (2,466) and Sydney Coffey (So., Boulder, CO) (2,440). Seattle Pacific's Maliea Luquin is sixth (2,432).

Friday's top performances were Howe with a 15.05 clocking in the 100 hurdles, Fellig clearing 5-5 in the high jump, Seattle Pacific's Brittany Tri having a mark of 33-5 1/4 in the shot put and Coffey running the 200 in 26.20.

Saturday's events are the long jump, javelin and 800.
