BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior javelin thrower Bethany Drake has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for April 10-16 after winning the javelin competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational last Friday with an NCAA Division II automatic-qualifying performance.
Drake (Sandy, OR) recorded a season-best throw of 49.48m (162-4) on her sixth and final attempt to win among a field of 35 competitors, including NCAA Division I throwers. Her mark leads the GNAC and ranks No. 2 nationally among Division II marks during the 2017 season.
The automatic-qualifying performance allows Drake, a two-time All-American and the 2014 javelin national champion, the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the fourth time in her career.
Drake earned the GNAC weekly honor for the second time during the 2017 season and seventh time in her career. She was previously named the GNAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on April 3 following her first week of competition during the season. Drake was a three-time GNAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week during 2016 as well as the GNAC Female Athlete of the Year.
The WWU track & field program continues its season on Saturday at the Spike Arlt Invitational, hosted by Central Washington University. The Vikings are set to host the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational on April 29 at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.
