Vikings compete on three fronts
April 20, 2004
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - It will be a busy week for the Western Washington University men's and women's track and field teams as the majority of the two squads compete in the Western Oregon University Twilight Invitational on Friday (2:30 p.m.) at Monmouth, Ore., and 16 Viking athletes participate in the prestigious University of Oregon Invitational on Saturday (10 a.m.) at Eugene, Ore.
And, if that isn't enough, three Viking athletes are taking part in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi-Events Championships on Thursday and Friday at Monmouth.
Leading the Western entries in the Oregon meet are two NCAA Division II national provisional qualifiers, women's javelin thrower Stacey Hopkins (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake - 136-5) and women's pole vaulter Danielle Juarez (Sr., Olympia/North Thurston - 11-5 3/4). Another provisional qualifier, distance runner Laura Trevellyen (Fr., Vashon/Vashon Island) will not compete because of tendonitis problems.
Women's discus thrower Jessica Telleria (So., Boise, ID/Capital - 137-4), who is coming off a standout performance at last week's Central Washington Invitational, also is going, as is Kurt Hartmaier (Sr., Woodinville/Redmond), who should have an excellent opportunity to achieve the provisional qualifying time in the men's 5000 meters.
Rounding out the Vikings going to Eugene are Melissa Behrens (Sr., Redmond/Eastlake) in the women's 100 ( 12.5) and 200 (25.78), Laura Burch (Jr., McMinnville, OR) in the women's 400 hurdles (1:05.28), Beth Griffin (Fr., Seattle/Kennedy) in the women's triple jump (34-9), Kirsten Holt (So., Lakewood) in the women's 100 hurdles (15.19), Eddie Kaeka (So., Spanaway/Spanaway Lake) in the men's 4x100 (49.9), Ryan Los (Jr., Gig Harbor/Peninsula) in the men's 400 hurdles (56.02) and 4x400 (4:02.46), Chris McClung (Sr., Vancouver/Skyview) in the men's 4x400, Mark Mellein (So., Maple Grove, MN) in the men's triple jump (45-5 1/4), Adam Neff (Fr., White Salmon/Columbia) in the men's 4x400, Jacob Petz (So., Pullman) in the men's 100 (10.8), 4x100 and 4x400; Beth Rosapepe (Jr., Port Orchard/South Kitsap) in the women's 10,000 (38:49.0), and Dustin Wilson (So., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) in the men's 110 hurdles (15.2) and 4x100.
In the GNAC multi-events meet, Western's Joshua Freeman (Jr., Bainbridge Island) enters with the conference's best performance of the year in the decathlon (6,326). Andy Behl (So., Everett/Cascade) (4,646) will also compete in the decathlon, and the Vikings' Jackie McCall (So., Spokane/Medical Lake) will participate in the heptathlon (3,794).
