Seventeen Vikings named GNAC academic all-stars

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Four Western Washington University student-athletes were named for the third straight year, two for the second consecutive season and 17 in all to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Academic all-star team announced today. Honored for the third time were hurdler Heidi Dimmitt (Sr., Wenatchee), sprinter Gail Butler (Sr., Issaquah), pole vaulter Christy Miller (Sr., Bishop Kelly) and high jumper Clara Cook (Sr., Wenatchee). Dimmitt, who is majoring in chemistry, is maintaining a 3.66 grade point average (4.0 scale). Butler, a cellular & molecular biology major, has a 3.65 GPA; Miller, a biology-ecology major, has a 3.48 GPA; and Cook, a communications sciences & disorders major, has a 3.36 GPA. Two Vikings receiving the honor for the second time were distance runner Tommy Race (Sr., Chelan) and sprinter Matt O'Connell (Jr., Sammamish/Skyline). Race, a science and technology major, has a 3.74 GPA; and O'Connell, a business administration major, has a 3.62 GPA. Completing Western's contingent were distance runner Lauren Breihof (So., Vancouver/Mountain View - pre-medicine, 3.55), steeplechaser Eric Brill (So., Kent/Kentwood - biology, 3.83), pole vaulter Diana DiMarco (So., Bozeman, MT - anthropology, 3.94), decathlete Alex Harrison (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) - physical education, 3.97), distance runner Greg Kutbitz (Sr., Kelso - mathematics, 3.82), pole vaulter Will Lloyd (So., Tumwater - physical education, 3.31), thrower Nik Skogsberg (Jr., Yelm - sports psychology, 3.20), jumper James Turner (Sr., Gig Harbor - interdisciplinary concepts, 3.80), middle distance runner Cheryl Watson (So., Olympia - environmental science, 3.20), distance runner Jordan Welling (So., Burlington/Burlington-Edison - business, 3.54) and sprinter Megan Zukowski (So., Maple Valley/Tahoma - physical education, 3.53). Six of the honorees are NCAA Division II national provisional qualifiers. They include Breihof, Brill, Cook, Dimmitt, Miller and Welling. To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum GPA of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university. Krinda Carlson of Saint Martin's is the lone all-star with a perfect 4.00 GPA. The top scholar on the men's team is Justin Karr of Western Oregon. The sophomore political science major has a 3.99 GPA. Northwest Nazarene placed the most athletes on the men's academic team with 11. Western Washington and Alaska Anchorage have nine and seven academic all-stars, respectively. NNU also led the way on the women's team with 19 academic all-stars. Seattle Pacific was also in double figures with 10. Fifteen athletes - six men and nine women - were named to the team for the third time. Thirty-one others - 15 men and 16 women - were selected for the second time. To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university. They must also qualify to compete in either the GNAC Indoor or Outdoor championship meet.
