Track & Field Places 29 on GNAC All-Academic Teams

May 17, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. The Western Washington University track & field teams had 29 student-athletes, 16 women and 13 men, named to Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Teams, announced Wednesday by the conference office.

The 13 selections from the WWU men’s team tied with Central Washington for the most men’s team selections from any GNAC school. The 16 honorees from the WWU women’s team were the second-most women’s team selections from any GNAC school.

For the women, six WWU student-athletes were honored for the third time in their careers. Two of the three-time honorees, senior Bethany Drake (Sandy, OR) and senior Megan Mortensen (Tacoma, WA/Franklin Pierce), are pursuing Master in Teaching graduate degrees with 4.0 GPAs in addition to GPAs from undergraduate studies that meet the requirement for the honor.

Senior Shawna Troupe (Kelso, WA) holds the highest undergraduate GPA for the WWU contingent at 3.94 as a kinesiology major, followed closely by senior Jasmine McMullin (Sequim, WA) with a 3.93 GPA as an English literature/elementary education major. Both became three-time honorees and were joined by seniors Sofia Marikis (Nine Mile Falls, WA/Lakeside) and Miranda Osadchey (DuPont, WA/Steilacoom) as three-time honorees as well.

Junior Maddy Hutchison (Snoqualmie, WA/Mount Si), junior Alexandra Laiblin (Oak Harbor, WA) and junior Anna Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur) were each honored for the second time in their careers.

On the men’s side, senior Gordie Kordas (Blaine, WA) led four three-time honorees for WWU on the GNAC All-Academic team with a 3.76 GPA as a chemistry major. Seniors Jacob Hino (Yakima, WA/Eisenhower), Mark Seely (Spokane, WA/Central Valley) and Andrew Wise (Denver, CO/East) were each honored for the third time in their careers as well.

To qualify for the GNAC All-Academic Teams, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher, be of sophomore standing or better and be in his or her second season competing at the nominating institution.

Drake, Paradee and senior Brittany Grant (Port Townsend, WA), also a GNAC All-Academic selection, will represent WWU at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships next week, held May 25-27, in Bradenton, Fla.
