PUEBLO, Colorado - Western Washington University's Alex Harrison (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) is 11th among 12 competitors following Day 1 in the decathlon at the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships which began Thursday at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.

Harrison opened the competition by tying his season best time of 11.54 seconds in the 100 meters. He posted marks of 19-11 (6.07) in the long jump, 43-9 (13.33) in the shot put and 5-8 1/2 (1.74) in the high jump before finishing with a 52.14 clocking in the 400. The high jump mark and 400 time were both season bests.

Harrison's point total of 3,329 in just 11 points shy of his total after the five events at the California Invitational in mid-April when he broke his own school record with 6,772 points.

Second-day action Friday, which begins at 10 a.m. MT, includes the 100 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500.

"It was a good day overall, but the second day is his best," said head coach Pee Wee Halsell (25th year). "This was definitely not what he wanted in some areas, but he's definitely within striking distance."

Central Missouri's Darius Walker leads with 3,956 points and the point totals for the athletes currently in seventh and eighth are just over 3,400. The top eight finishers earn All-America recognition.

Harrison, who missed last season with a hamstring injury, is a two-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference decathlon champion. He placed 10th in the decathlon (6142) at nationals in 2010.

Another competitor for WWU on opening day at nationals was Michael Hoffman (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome), who placed 15th in the men's hammer with a mark of 192-6 (58.67 meters). It was his third straight national appearance.

A three-time GNAC champion, Hoffman set a school record last year with a mark of 206-3. His best effort this season was 205-1.

On Friday, the Vikings' Karis Anderson (Jr., Seattle/Roosevelt) will be in the women's pole vault and Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley) in the women's triple jump.

On Saturday, Harrison competes in the men's javelin as does Katie Reichert (Fr., Kelso) in the women's javelin.

Harrison finished fifth (200-9) two years ago at nationals in the javelin.

Anderson entered the meet tied for seventh nationally in the pole vault at 12-7 1/2, and Reichert ranks seventh in the javelin (148-4). Harrison is eighth in the javelin (214-7) and Warman is 13th in the triple jump (40-5). All of those marks, except for Reichert's, are school records.

Anderson is making her second appearance at outdoor nationals. Last year, she tied for seventh (12-1/2), and in March she placed fifth at indoor nationals with a school record vault of 12-9 1/2. On March 31, she cleared a WWU outdoor best of 12-7 1/2.

Warman is at outdoor nationals for the first time after making two indoor appearances prior to redshirting last season. She won the indoor national title in the triple jump as a freshman in 2009 (39-3) and placed 10th in 2010.

This spring, Warman bettered her own triple jump school record and tied the long jump standard of 19-2 that was originally set in 1982.
