Drake and Paradee Named USTFCCCA All-Americans

June 5, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior Bethany Drake has been named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) First Team All-American following her second career national championship in the javelin while junior Anna Paradee has earned USTFCCCA Second Team All-America honors with an 11th-place finish in the pole vault at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 25-27 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Drake (Sandy, OR) earned USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors for the third time in her career while Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur) was named an All-American for the second time during the current year following an All-American pole vault performance during the 2017 indoor season. USTFCCCA First Team All-America status is achieved by placing among the top 8 in an event at the national championships while USTFCCCA Second Team All-America honors are earned by student-athletes placing 9th through 12th in individual events on the national stage.

Drake captured the 2017 javelin national championship after finishing 2nd in 2016 and winning the national title in 2014. Her mark of 51.81m/170-0 recorded at the 2017 national championships was over 12 feet further than the 2nd-place finisher to close out an illustrious collegiate career. Her title was the fifth women’s javelin title in program history, joining Joan Williamson (1984, NAIA), Monika Gruszecki (2007 & 2011, NCAA II) and Drake’s first NCAA II title in 2014.

A four-time outdoor national championships participant, the career-best mark set by Drake of 54.18m/177-9 in 2016 is the Great Northwest Athletic Conference record and ranks 2nd in WWU history. The GNAC javelin champion in 2017 and a two-time GNAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week during her senior year, Drake was also named a co-recipient of the WWU Female Athlete of the Year and WWU Female Scholar Athlete of the Year awards following her senior campaign.

Paradee cleared 3.83m/12-6.75 at the 2017 outdoor national championships to place 11th and wrap up an outstanding junior season. During the indoor season, Paradee set the WWU pole vault record and tied for the GNAC record at the indoor national championships while placing 7th before setting school and conference records during the outdoor season as well.

At the indoor national championships, Paradee cleared 3.92m/12-10.25 in posting her record indoor mark while her top career outdoor mark came at the Ken Shannon Invitational on May 5 when she cleared 4.01m/13-1.75 to set school and conference records. She was twice named the GNAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week during the 2017 outdoor season.

Drake and Paradee were each previously named USTFCCCA All-West Region selections. In addition to athletic accomplishments, both student-athletes were members of the 2017 GNAC All-Academic Team and were 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Division II All-District 8 honorees.
