SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
Western Washington University women's javelin throwers Katie Reichert (So., Longview/Kelso) and Bethany Drake (So., Sandy, OR) placed 13th and 15th, respectively, as the United States Track & Field Outdoor Championships opened Thursday at Hornet Stadium on the campus of host Sacramento State University.
Reichert had a mark of 159-1 (48.50 meters) on her third attempt, and Drake threw 155-8 (47.44) on her first effort. Karen Patterson, representing Asics, won the competition with a throw of 204-10 (62.43).
Drake and Reichert placed first and second, just one inch separating their best throws, at the NCAA Division II National Championships in late May. Both were recognized as All-Americans by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Drake entered the NCAA meet as the DII national leader with a school-record throw of 169-6. She had a winning effort of 165-3 on her fourth attempt. Reichert threw a personal-best 165-2 on her final attempt.
