BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Seven Western Washington University student-athletes have been named 2014 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Track and Field Academic All-Stars announced Wednesday.
Recognized were Bethany Drake (So., Sandy, Ore.), Jacob Gilbert (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome), Chip Jackson (Sr., Shoreline/Shorewood), Matt Lutz (So., Bremerton/Olympic), Jon Poolman (Jr., Langley/South Whidbey), Katie Reichert (So., Longview/Kelso) and Devon Smith (Sr., Marysville/Lakewood).
It is the third honor for Poolman, a business administration major with a 3.66 (4.0 scale) grade point average, and the second for Drake, an art major with a 3.83 GPA, and Smith, a business administration major with a 3.56 GPA.
Jackson is a mathematics and computer science major with a 3.91 GPA, Gilbert was an electronics engineering major with a 3.63 GPA, Reichert a communications major with a 3.51 GPA and Lutz a geophysics major with a 3.35 GPA.
Drake and Reichert placed one-two in the women's javelin at the 2014 NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships, both earning USTFCCCA All-America honors.
Drake, who was the USTFCCCA West Region Field Athlete of the Year, had a school-record mark of 169-6.
Reichert won the javelin at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships and was a West Region indoor all-star in the pentathlon and outdoor all-star.
Poolman and Smith ran on WWU's winning men's 4x400-meter relay at the GNAC outdoor championships and set a school indoor record with a 3:16.81 clocking.
Gilbert was a USTFCCCA West Region outdoor and indoor all-star and the GNAC indoor champion in the men's shot put.
Jackson competed in at the indoor nationals in the men's mile and set a school record 4:07.95.
