Cross Country Headed to Sundodger Invitational

Sept. 15, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The Western Washington University cross country teams return to action with the Sundodger Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington, at Lincoln Park in West Seattle on Saturday for the second of three consecutive weekends of competition.

The Sundodger Invitational begins at 9 am with the women's 6K open race while the men's 8K open race is set to take place at 9:40 am. The meet features a total of eight races during the day and GNAC member schools Alaska, Central Washington, Concordia, Northwest Nazarene, Simon Fraser and Seattle Pacific are also scheduled to compete at the meet. Last year at the meet, the WWU women placed 8th while the WWU men took 13th and two years ago the women won the meet while the men placed 3rd in respective open divisions.

The WWU men enter the weekend ranked No. 8 among West Region teams in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll while the WWU women rank No. 9 in the West Region. Both teams are the third Great Northwest Athletic Conference member school ranked among the regional rankings.

Last weekend at the Saint Martin's University Triangular Meet the Vikings picked up a pair of team wins competing against Saint Martin's and Central Washington.

The women's squad placed eight runners among the top 10 to total 20 points, one place away from a perfect score and well ahead of Central Washington (46) and Saint Martin's (78). The men's team placed its top 5 finishers among the top 15 and finished with 23 points ahead of Central Washington (34) and Saint Martin's (80). Senior Lillianna Stelling (Langley, WA/South Whidbey) was the top WWU placer on the women's side, finishing 2nd with a time of 14:56.0 on the 4K course while senior Andrew Wise (Denver, CO/East) led the WWU men with a 3rd-place finish on the 6K course in 19:53.0.

Following the Sundodger Invitational, the Vikings will compete in two locations next weekend. WWU will return to Saint Martin's for the SMU Open and will also compete at the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn.

Looking ahead to October, the Vikings will have consecutive competition dates in Bellingham at East Lake Padden Park, first at the 44th Annual WWU Classic on Oct. 7 before hosting the GNAC Championships (Oct. 21) for a third consecutive year.
