Sept. 22, 2017

Roy Griak Invitational Meet Info | Saint Martin's Invitational Meet Info

Update: Release has been edited to reflect the schedule change in Minnesota.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. –
The Western Washington University cross country teams are set to race in two locations on Saturday, competing at the Roy Griak Invitational as well as the Saint Martin’s University Invitational.

The prestigious Roy Griak Invitational is hosted by the University of Minnesota and held at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn., a suburb of Saint Paul, Minn. The meet is in its 32nd year and features a total of 10 races (six collegiate, four high school). The Vikings will send 14 competitors (seven men, seven women) to Minnesota while the remainder of WWU runners competing this weekend will be in action at the Saint Martin’s Invitational.

Update: A late schedule update due to heat concerns in Minnesota shifted the original race schedule. The WWU women will race in a combined NCAA Division II/NCAA Division III race at 7 am PT/9 am CT while the WWU men will race in a combined NCAA Division II/NCAA Division III race at 7:40 am PT/9:40 am CT.

The original race schedule was as follows:

The Women’s Maroon II (Division II) competition at the Roy Griak Invitational will be a 6K and features 44 NCAA Division II teams, set to take place at 7:50 am PT/9:50 am CT. The Men’s Maroon II (Division II) competition is an 8K race composed of 44 NCAA Division II teams and is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am PT/11:30 am CT. FloTrack will provide a live stream (FloTrack subscription required) of the races on Saturday.

The Saint Martin’s Invitational, hosted at the SMU campus in Lacey, Wash., will start at 9:30 am PT on Saturday with the women’s 5K. The men’s 8K will follow at 10:05 am PT. WWU will be competing at Saint Martin’s for a second time during the month after opening the season with a pair of team wins at the SMU Triangular on Sept. 9.

The Vikings competed at both the Roy Griak Invitational and the Saint Martin’s Invitational during the same weekend last year as well. The men placed 5th at the Roy Griak Invitational and 2nd at the Saint Martin’s Invitational while the women finished 6th at the Roy Griak Invitational and 2nd at the Saint Martin’s Invitational. Both the WWU men and WWU women each earned teams wins at the Saint Martin’s Invitational during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

The Vikings most recently competed at the Sundodger Invitational last Saturday with the men placing 4th (2nd among GNAC schools) and the women placing 5th (3rd among GNAC schools) in respective open divisions. Both WWU teams remained unchanged in regional ranking positions from last week, as the WWU men enter the weekend ranked No. 8 among West Region teams in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll while the WWU women rank No. 9 in the West Region. The WWU men are third among Great Northwest Athletic Conference member schools ranked regionally while the WWU women are fourth among conference schools ranked in the region.

Following Saturday’s competition, the next two meets for the Vikings will be held in Bellingham at East Lake Padden Park. WWU hosts the 44th Annual WWU Classic on Oct. 7 and the GNAC Championships (Oct. 21) for a third consecutive year.
