USTFCCCA Top 25 Coaches' Poll

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The nationally ranked Western Washington University men's and women's cross country teams make their only home appearance Saturday, Oct. 6, at the 39th annual Viking Invitational being held at Lake Padden Park.

The men's 10-kilometer race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 6-kilometer run at 11a.m.

The 16-team field is composed of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, British Columbia, Central Washington, Club Northwest, Eastside Runners, Lane CC, Pacific Lutheran, Saint Martin's, Skagit Valley CC, Simon Fraser, Trinity Lutheran (men), Trinity Western, Victoria, Valley Royals (women) and WWU.

The Vikings are ranked No.11 in the men's division and No.23 in the women's division in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 polls.

Alaska Anchorage, which is the two-time defending WWU Invitational champion in both divisions, is No.5 in the women's poll and No.7 in the men's rating. Victoria placed second in both divisions last year.

Simon Fraser is No.11 in the women's poll.

WWU ranks third in the West Regional men's ranking and is sixth in the women's rating. Alaska Anchorage leads the women's poll and is second in the men's poll.

"I'm looking for a solid run that shows improvement from two weeks ago," said WWU coach Pee Wee Halsell (26th year). "And I want to see where we stack up to Alaska Anchorage. They are the team to go after, both for the men and the women.

"I want to see how we're moving up and how our fitness is coming along. Outside of injuries or sickness, we plan on having everyone run."

Pacing the WWU men, who had won six straight invitational titles prior to 2010, are Dak Riek (Jr., Everett/Mariner) and Chip Jackson (Jr., Shoreline/Shorewood). Jackson won the open division at the Sundodger Invitational and Riek placed third at the Saint Martin's meet.

Also expected to do well for the Vikings are Tyler Cannon (Sr., Kennewick/Kamiakin), Tanner Boyd (Hr., Camas), Dylan Peterson (Jr., Seattle/Garfield), Kyle Johnson (Sr., Nine Mile Falls/Lakeside) and Tabor Reedy (So., Poulsbo/North Kitsap).

Katelyn Steen (So., Sammamish/Eastlake) has been the women's leader for WWU with third-place finishes in each of her last two meets.

Other top runners for the Viking women are Haley O'Connor (So., Sammamish/Eastlake), Taylor Guenther (Fr., Vancouver/Prairie), Maddy Jalbert (Fr., Niwot, CO), Austen Reiter (Fr., Camas) and Arielle Walton (Jr., Issaquah).

"We have a close group for the men that we need to move up nearer Jackson and Riek, and the same for the women, getting them to move up to Katelyn."

Following Saturday's meet, WWU takes a week off before competing in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 20 at Monmouth, Ore. (host Western Oregon).
