Vikings to Host 44th Annual WWU Classic on Saturday

Oct. 5, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University cross country teams return to action on Saturday morning, hosting the 44th Annual WWU Cross Country Classic at East Lake Padden Park for the first of two meets in Bellingham during October.

The women’s 6,000-meter race is set to begin at 10 am on Saturday with the men’s 10,000-meter race to follow at 11 am. A total of 14 women’s teams and 13 men’s team are scheduled to compete, with approximately 130 women and 150 men entered to race as of Thursday.

A WWU Cross Country Classic web page has been established with meet information, a course map, entries, starting box assignments and more. Results will be posted to the page as soon as possible following the meet.

Parking at East Lake Padden Park will be limited and is anticipated to fill quickly on Saturday morning. Carpooling is encouraged, if possible. Additional parking is available at West Lake Padden Park and a shuttle will run from West Lake Padden Park to the start/finish at East Lake Padden Park during race day.

The WWU Classic is held two weeks before the GNAC Championships, which will be hosted in Bellingham at East Lake Padden Park for the third consecutive year. Seven of the 11 GNAC teams are scheduled to compete at the WWU Classic on Saturday and along with the races serving as a preview of the conference meet, Saturday’s men’s race gives teams a rare opportunity to compete at the regional and national championships distance of 10,000 meters.

In its 44th year of existence, the WWU Classic has been held since 1974. Last year at the WWU Classic, Trinity Western claimed the men’s team title with WWU’s Isaac Derline, a probable 2017 redshirt, claiming the individual title as the Vikings placed 4th. On the women’s side, Alaska Anchorage won the women’s team title last year with the WWU women finishing 7th.

Among ranked teams in the field of schools competing at the 44th Annual WWU Classic on Saturday, the Chico State men are ranked No. 4 nationally in the most recent field U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll while the Simon Fraser women rank No. 4 nationally as well. The Chico State women are ranked No. 12 in the most recent national poll.

Among regionally ranked teams, the Chico State men are the top-ranked West Region team while the Simon Fraser women are No. 1-ranked regionally as well. The Chico State women rank No. 4 in the West Region while the Seattle Pacific women (West Region) and Chadron State women (South Central Region) are each ranked No. 9 in respective regional polls. The Simon Fraser men are also ranked No. 9 in the West Region.

The WWU men remained ranked No. 7 in the West Region with the release of the most recent poll on Tuesday. The WWU women were ranked No. 10 in last week’s poll but are not ranked in the most recent poll.

The Vikings most recently competed two weekends ago on Sept. 23, racing at the Roy Griak Invitational as well as the Saint Martin’s Invitational. The WWU men placed 4th while the women placed 7th against deep and talented fields of competition at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational. At Saint Martin’s, the men placed 2nd while the women were 5th. Click here for full results and a recap.

Saturday’s meet is the last meet for the Vikings before the GNAC Championships on Oct. 21 at East Lake Padden Park.
