Eight WWU runners named GNAC Academic All-Stars

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Chip Jackson (Sr., Shoreline/Shorewood) was honored for the third straight year, heading eight Western Washington University runners named as 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Academic All-Stars as announced Wednesday, Nov. 6, by the conference office.

Jackson is a mathematics major who is maintaining a 3.89 grade point average (4.0 scale). He placed fourth at the GNAC Championships, helping the Vikings finish second just three points behind Alaska Anchorage.

Maddy Jalbert (So., Niwot), who has a 3.97 GPA, was another repeater for the Vikings.

Rounding out the WWU contingent were Taylor Graham (So., Burlington/Burlington-Edison), who has a 3.61 GPA; Taylor Guenther (So., Vancouver/Prairie), an elementary education major with a 3.78 GPA; Will Jones (So., Vancouver/Columbia River), an economics major with a 3.21 GPA; Jonathan Quimby (Jr., Ferndale), an environmental policy major with a 3.32 GPA; Trevor Robinson (Jr., Seattle/Nathan Hale), a planning and environmental policy major with a 3.98 GPA; and Mikhaila Thornton (Jr., Bend, OR/Mountain View), an industrial design major with a 3.50 GPA.

Both the WWU men's and women's harriers compete at the NCAA Division II West Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Spokane.

Three Post Perfect 4.00 GPAs to Highlight Cross Country Academic Team

PORTLAND, Ore. - A total of 68 student-athletes - 31 men and 37 women - have been named to the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference cross country all-conference academic team.

Heading up the academic squad are three athletes - Michael Fehrenbach of Alaska Fairbanks, Sarah Freistone of Alaska Anchorage and Jinise Osborne of Montana State Billings - with perfect 4.00 GPAs.

Lorenzo Smith of Simon Fraser has a 4.22 GPA in the Canadian system which awards 4.33 points for an A+.

Seven athletes - Tux Seims and Alyson McPhetres of Alaska Fairbanks, Nathan Minor of Central Washington, Erika Crock of Saint Martin's, James Young and Kirsten Allen of Simon Fraser, and Chip Jackson of Western Washington - were named to the team for the third time.

An additional 18 athletes - six men and 12 women - were named to the team for the second time.

To qualify for the academic team athletes must have a minimum GPA of at least 3.20 and competing in at least their second season at their respective universities.
