Derline Set to Compete at NCAA Championships

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Junior Isaac Derline will represent Western Washington University on the national stage Saturday, competing as an individual at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in Saint Leo, Fla., hosted by Saint Leo University.

The men's 10,000-meter race will begin at 5:30 am PT/8:30 am ET on Saturday morning, held at The Abbey Course. Live timing results will be provided.

Derline (Kent, WA/Kentridge) placed 5th to lead the WWU men at the NCAA West Region Championships on Nov. 5 and advanced to the national championships as one of the top 3 individual finishers not associated with a qualifying team. The WWU men placed 7th while the women were 8th at the regional meet, hosted by Montana State Billings. Both teams finished two places back from a qualifying team position.

Derline has placed no lower than 6th in each of the five meets at which he has competed this season, earning All-GNAC honors at the conference meet and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-West Region accolades with his 5th-place finish at the West Region Championships.. He won the WWU Classic on Oct. 8 and placed 3rd at the GNAC Championships on Oct. 22.

He will be competing at the national championships for the second time in his career. As a freshman in 2014 he placed 104th (32:29.6) at the national meet in Louisville, Ky., helping the Vikings to a 13th place team finish.
