Cannon is men's MVP, Breihof and Johnson share women's honor

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Tyler Cannon (Jr., Kennewick/Kamiakin) was the men's MVP and Lauren Breihof (Sr., Vancouver/Mountain View) and Rachael Johnson (Sr., Yakima/West Valley) were co-MVPs for the women at the Western Washington University Cross Country awards banquet held Tuesday night on campus. The awards were determined by vote of the respective team members. Cannon, a transfer from Brigham Young, and Dak Riek (So., Everett/Mariner), a transfer from CC of Spokane, shared the men's Newcomer of the Year award; and Katelyn Steen (Fr., Sammamish/Eastlake) was the women's Rookie of the Year. Johnson was the women's inspirational award winner, and Eric Brill was the men's winner in that category. Tanner Boyd (Jr., Camas) and Dylan Peterson (So., Seattle/Garfield) were co-most improved award winners for the men, and Mary Rogers (Jr., Spokane/Shadle Park) took the women's honor. Rogers and Haida Ikeda (So., Issaquah) were named women's co-captains for 2012. Leading the men will be Boyd, Peterson and Kyle Johnson (Jr., Nine Mile Falls/Lakeside). WWU placed 10th in the men's division and 12th in the women's division at the 2011 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships. It was the fifth straight national appearance for the men and the fourth consecutive for the women. |
