BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Guards Ira Graham (Jr., Fontana, CA) and Andrew Ready (Jr., Chicago, IL/Westinghouse) each scored 17 points as Western Washington University defeated Seattle University, 79-68, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium.

The Vikings improved to 12-6 overall and 5-4 in the GNAC, and are 8-1 at Carver Gym.

Seattle U., fell to 11-7 overall and 4-5 in the GNAC. The Redhawks, who are moving up to NCAA Division I next season, have lost six of their last 11 games after a 6-0 start and being ranked No.7 nationally. Guard Michael Knight came off the bench to lead Seattle U. with 18 points.

The score was tied at 40-40 at halftime. Center Ryan Coldren gave Seattle the first points of the second half on a short jumper, but Western then went on a 13-2 run, holding the Redhawks without a field goal for five minutes and taking a 53-44 lead with 13:28 to play.

Seattle responded with six straight points to pull within three, 53-50, with 11:42 left, but never got that close again, and was never closer than eight points in the final seven minutes.

Forward Steve Alford (Jr., Bakersfield, CA/South) had 14 points for Western, and reserve center David Brittinen (Jr., Hoquiam) added 10 points and seven rebounds. The Vikings shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field and had a 35-31 edge in rebounds, with forward Calin Schell (Jr., Chelan) grabbing a game-high 10.

Coldren had 12 points for Seattle, and guard Chris Gweth added 11. Michael Wright grabbed nine rebounds for the Redhawks.

Graham, the GNAC's leading scorer at 19.9 points a game, scored eight points in the first seven minutes as the Vikings jumped to a 21-10 lead. But the Redhawks responded with a 21-5 charge, concluding with 12 straight points, and took a 36-31 lead with 6:56 left in the first period.

Western travels to Western Oregon on Thursday (7 p.m.) for a GNAC counter.
