White defeats Blue, 111-80, in WWU intra-squad game

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Guard Rico Wilkins (Sr., Dallas, TX/DeSoto) connected on his first eight shots and scored a game-high 27 points, leading the White team to a convincing 111-80 triumph over the Blue in the 20th annual Western Washington University Blue/White men's basketball intra-squad game Sunday afternoon at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus. Wilkins, one of six players in double figures for the White, was 12-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-5 on three-pointers, and added five assists and three steals. Guard Dane Thorpe (Jr., Bellingham/Sehome) had 21 points for the White, and center Austin Bragg (Jr., Longview/Mark Morris), a transfer from Clark CC, added 20 points and eight rebounds. Guard John Allen (Sr., Brier/Mountlake Terrace) led the Blue with 26 points on 10-of-20 field-goal shooting. The White jumped to an 11-3 lead in the first five minutes and held a 60-36 advantage at halftime. They extended the margin to 27 points, 63-36, on a Bragg three-pointer to open the second half, but the Blue rallied with 14 straight points, closing the gap to 63-50 on a three-pointer by Allen with 16:25 left, but never got that close again. The White shot a blistering 66.7 percent on three-pointers, hitting 14-of-21. Bragg was 4-of-5 on treys and Thorpe 5-of-8. Center Chris Mitchell (Sr., Everson/Nooksack Valley had 17 points for the Blue and forward Paul Jones (Sr., Kent/Kent-Meridian) added 15. Guard Richard Woodworth (Jr., Bellevue/Newport) had 10 points and a game-high eight assists for the White, and forward Anye Turner (So., Tumwater/Black Hills), a transfer from South Puget Sound CC), had 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. The Blue had a 46-33 advantage in rebounds and hit 63.4 percent (45-of-71) from the floor. WWU has exhibition games against two NCAA Division I teams this week, traveling to Washington on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and to Duke on Saturday (2 p.m. ET). |
