WWU defeats Victoria BC, 81-68, in exhibition at Carver Gym

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Guard John Allen (Jr., Brier/Mountlake Terrace) scored 17 points and had five steals, both game highs, as Western Washington University defeated University of Victoria, 81-68, in a men's basketball exhibition contest at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus. Western held a 38-28 lead at halftime and extended the margin to 17, 54-37, with less than 15 minutes left. Victoria, triggered by back-to-back 3-pointers by Ryan Mackinnon, then scored 13 straight points to pull within four, 54-50, with 11:45 to go. But the Vikings reasserted control of the contest, using a 13-3 run to take a 67-53 advantage with 7:18 to play. The margin remained in double digits the rest of the way. Terrell Evans came off the bench to lead Victoria with 13 points. Mackinnon added 12 points for the Vikes, and guard Zac Andrus had 10. Forward Rory Blanche (Sr., Ashland, OR) had 14 points on 7-of-10 field-goal shooting for Western. Guard Rico Wilkins (Jr., Dallas, TX/DeSoto) added 12 points for the Vikings, who shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field, including 47.1 percent (8-of-17) on 3-pointers. Western opens its season Friday (7:30 p.m.) at the West Coast Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif., meeting Dominican (Calif.) University. |
