BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Led by six players scoring in double figures, the No. 22-ranked Western Washington University men’s basketball team closed out the preseason with a 118-54 exhibition victory over Quest University Wednesday evening on WECU Court at Carver Gym.
Sophomore forward Daulton Hommes (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) led all players with 23 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point range. “I liked our energy out there tonight and the fact that we got to see so many players out on the court hustling and really giving good minutes,” said head coach Tony Dominguez, the 2016-17 GNAC Coach of the Year. “We are a little banged up right now, so for us to see so many players get out there and perform well is really cool for our program. It is a great bunch of guys that are ready to get going in the regular season.”
Quest, out of Squamish, British Columbia, was led by 17 points off the bench from forward Rhys Blake.
The Vikings built a sizeable 59-20 lead at the half, fueled by an early 25-3 run. After trailing 5-4, the Vikings out-scored the Kermodes 25-3 over a seven-minute span. Dickson led the Vikings with 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting in the half, followed by 9 points from Kingma (4-for-6 FG) and 7 points from Fernandez. Overall WWU shot 55.3% from the field (21-for-38), with 47.4% accuracy from 3-point range (9-for-19).
Hommes led WWU with 17 points in the second half, followed by 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting by Rojas.
The Vikings, who were selected earlier this week to repeat as conference champions in the annual GNAC preseason coaches poll, officially open the 2017-18 season Nov. 10-11 hosting the PacWest/GNAC Conference Challenge at Carver Gym. WWU will play Notre Dame de Namur in the season opener on Friday, Nov. 10 and Hawai'i-Hilo on Saturday, Nov. 11, with both games starting at 7:30 pm. There will be a 5 pm game each day of the tournament with GNAC member Simon Fraser also playing in the four-team tournament.
