BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Center Steve Severin (So., Richland/Hanford) scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds as Western Washington University defeated Another Level, 104-98, in a men's basketball exhibition game Thursday on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
Forward Steve Alford (Jr., Bakersfield, CA) added 15 points on 6-of-8 field-goal shooting for the Vikings.
Kendrick Holly led Another Level with 24 points, going 7-of-11 on 3-pointers. Western alum Lukas Henne added 17 points and Justin White had 14 for the Blue Angels.
Another Level held an early 8-4 lead, but the Vikings went on a 17-2 run to open up a 21-10 lead with 14:19 left in the first half, and held a 63-48 advantage at halftime.
Western still led by 15, 82-67, with 13:05 to play, but the Blue Angels chipped away, eventually taking a 95-94 lead on a putback by former Western All-American Grant Dykstra with 3:53 left.
But the Vikings took over after that, regaining the lead on a layup by Alford and holding the Blue Angels scoreless the rest of the way until Holly banked in a 50-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Western, which was without leading returning scorer Ira Graham (Jr., Fontana, CA) because of an ankle injury, shot 50 percent (38-of-76) from the field and had a 49-36 edge in rebounds.
Guard Derrick Webb (Jr., Port Orchard/South Kitsap) and center Zach Bruce (Jr., Oceanside, CA) each had 13 points for the Vikings, and guards Andrew Ready (Jr., Chicago, IL/Westinghouse) and Jason Pegues (Jr., Seattle/Cleveland) each added 10.
Western travels to Fresno State for an exhibition game Sunday, Nov. 4 (4 p.m.). The Bulldogs finished 22-10 last year and made a trip to the NIT, the school's first post-season appearance in five years.
