WWU defeats Notre Dame de Namur, 77-67, in season opener

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Guard Richard Woodworth (Sr., Bellevue/Newport) led a balanced attack with 18 points and four assists as Western Washington University defeated Notre Dame de Namur University, 77-67, in a men's basketball game on Friday, Nov. 15, at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus, the season opener for both schools.

The Vikings, ranked No.10 in the National Basketball Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25 Pre-season Poll, also got 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds from center Austin Bragg (Sr., Longview/Mark Morris) in extending their school and conference record home court winning streak to 28 games.

Guard Simon Enciso led NDNU with 17 points, scoring 15 points on 7-of-11 field-goal shooting in the second half. Micah Dunhour and Zach Ginter each added 11.

WWU led by as much as 18 points and held a 63-46 advantage with just over 10 minutes remaining, but the Argonauts used an 11-2 run to narrow the margin to 65-57 with 6:19 to go. NDNU eventually pulled within six on two occasions, the last time at 73-67 on two Geoff Hartman free throws with 1:13 left, but got no closer.

Joey Schreiber (R-Fr., Renton/Eastside Catholic) opened his WWU career by scoring 12 points on 5-of-9 field-goal shooting, and another newcomer, Robert Harris, Jr. (Sr., Kent/Rainier Beach), a transfer from NCAA I Idaho, had 11points.

WWU never trailed, and used a 12-3 run to close the first half and take a 44-27 lead at halftime.

WWU, which is opening its season with eight home games, entertains Brigham Young Hawaii on Tuesday, Nov. 19 (7 p.m.).
