SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University allowed just four field goals during the final 16:30 of the first half as the Vikings rolled over Cal State University Monterey Bay, 72-58, in opening-day men's basketball action Friday at the Seattle Pacific University Tip-Off Classic at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

It was the third straight win for Western, which improved to 4-1. The Vikings got a team-high 14 points from forward Zach Bruce (Sr., Oceanside, CA), and 12 each from forward Derrick Webb (Sr., Port Orchard/South Kitsap) and guard Andrew Ready (Sr., Chicago, IL/Westinghouse), who also had four assists.

The loss evened CSUMB's record at 1-1. The Otters were led by the game-high 20 points of Keith Wilson.

Western held the Otters to 31.3 percent (20-of-64) field-goal shooting and had eight blocked shots, three by 7-foot center Dave Vanderjagt (Sr., Townsville, Australia), who was making his first start of the season.

Trailing 10-9 after the first five minutes, the Vikings went on a 27-6 run to lead 36-16 with 3:30 left in the first half following two free throws by reserve guard Cameron Severson (So., Petersburg, AK).

Western center Chris Mitchell (R-Fr., Everson/Nooksack Valley) came off the bench to score six of his eight points during that run.

The Vikings, who led 43-23 at halftime, increased their lead to as many as 24 points, 53-29, with 12:34 left after a jumper by Vanderjagt, and were ahead by 21, 64-43, with 5:31 to go.

Western point guard Morris Anderson (Sr., Federal Way) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and had four assists and five points, and reserve Rory Blanche (So., Ashland, OR) added nine points.

The Vikings shot 50.0 percent (16-of-32) from the floor in the first half, but just 27.6 percent (8-of-29) in the second. They made only 2-of-19 3-pointers.

Western was without starting forward Michael Duty (Sr., Seattle/O'Dea), who is out indefinitely after suffering a fractured finger on his left (non-shooting) hand Monday in the Vikings' home-opening 74-60 win over Northwest.

The victory over CSUMB was the 449th in the 25-year Western coaching career of Brad Jackson, who will go for No.450 on Saturday (3 p.m.) when the Vikings close out the tourney against Dominican University CA.
