Game 4 - GWS - Vikings suffer second loss of tourney, 80-70 to Rollins FL

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Tournament MVP Nick Wolf had game-highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds, leading Rollins College FL, to an 80-70 victory over Western Washington University in final-day men's basketball action Friday at the fourth Great Western Shootout held at The Arena at South Point. Western fell to 6-3 with its second loss of the tournament. Forward Rory Blanche (Jr., Ashland, OR) had a team-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Vikings, and center Chris Mitchell (So., Everson/Nooksack Valley) added 16 points and six rebounds. Rollins claimed the tournament championship and improved to 8-2. Alex Castillo came off the bench to score 14 points, and forward Matt Robertson had 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Vikings trailed by as many as 14 in the second half, but rallied to pull within five, 75-70, on a fastbreak layin by Dane Thorpe (R-Fr., Bellingham/Sehome) with 1:50 left. Rollins then worked the shot clock down and Wolf, a consensus first-team All-American last season, who hit an 18-foot jumper off a spin move as the clock expired. Western never got closer than six in the final minute. Guard Derek Dickerson (Fr., Bellingham/Squalicum) had 12 points on 4-of-9 3-point shooting for Western, which was 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) on treys. Rollins had a 37-28 advantage in rebounds, and made 22-of-31 free throws (71.0 percent) to just 5-of-6 (81.3 percent) for Western. Rollins used a run of eight straight points to take the biggest lead of the first half, 31-22 with 7:22 left, and held a 42-34 advantage at halftime. Robertson and Blanche joined Wolf on the all-tournament team, which also included Aaron Hill of Cal State San Bernardino and Humberto Perez and Jody Johnson of Central Washington. Western, which was the defending GWS champion, takes a break for the Christmas holiday before playing host to Simon Fraser University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game on Sunday, Jan. 2 (7 p.m.). |
