WHAT’S HAPPENING…the WWU men’s basketball team (11-3, 6-0 GNAC) begins a stretch of four consecutive road games traveling to play Simon Fraser (8-6, 2-4 GNAC) on Tuesday night in Burnaby, BC and heading east to play Montana State Billings (10-7, 2-4 GNAC) on Saturday…both games will be streamed online with live stats at WWUVikings.com/Live.
HOT START IN GNAC PLAY…WWU sits atop the GNAC standings with a perfect 6-0 start in league play, going 4-0 at home and 2-0 on the road…Western Oregon is right behind WWU at 5-1 in league play and Seattle Pacific is 4-2…Vikings have won 14 consecutive games vs. GNAC opponents dating back to last season…first 6-0 start in GNAC play since opening the 2012-13 slate 15-0.
LAST WEEK…the Vikings extended their current winning streak to 6 consecutive games with a pair of home wins last week vs. Northwest Nazarene (67-66) and Central Washington (77-67)…won both games with stellar defense, holding the two opponents to a combined 38.2 field goal percentage…also tallied 6.5 blocks per game and had a +16.5 rebound advantage…Daulton Hommes (18.0), Deandre Dickson (16.5) and Trey Drechsel (10.5) averaged double-digits in points in the two games.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES…in WWU’s 77-67 win over Central Washington on Jan. 6, three Vikings recorded a double-double (points/rebounds): Trey Drechsel (18 points, 11 rebounds), Daulton Hommes (17 points, 10 rebounds), Deandre Dickson (15 points, 13 rebounds)…WWU joins Florida Tech (12/18/17 vs. Miles College) as the only DII teams with three double-doubles in a game this season…in all of NCAA (Division I, II, III), only 14 teams have logged a game with three double-doubles…dating back to 1985-86, the game vs. CWU was the only time a WWU team has had three players log a double-double in a game.
THE RECORD…WWU is 11-3 overall and in first place in the GNAC with a 6-0 record…current 6-game winning streak, and has won 9 of its last 10 games…finished non-conference play with a 5-3 record…10 of 14 games have been played in Bellingham (7-3 record)…scored at least 70 points in 13 of 14 games this season.

THE BLOCK…WWU leads the GNAC and ranks second in NCAA Division II averaging 6.6 blocks per game…trails only national leader Chowan, who is at 7.0 blocks per game…current blocks per game average would set a single-season program record, currently held by the 1991-92 and 1988-89 squads with 5.8 blocks per game…Logan Schilder and Deandre Dickson are tied for the team lead and 44th in NCAA II averaging 1.8 blocks per game (25 total blocks).
THE BIG 5…WWU has used the same starting lineup in all 14 games to start the season, with Daulton Hommes (6-7) and Deandre Dickson (6-9) at forward, Trey Drechsel (6-6) and Trevor Jasinsky (6-7) at guard, and 7-footer Logan Schilder at center…the starting lineup averages 6 feet, 8 inches in height…the starters have combined for 899 of WWU’s 1203 total points, 74.7 percent of the team’s scoring output…Daulton Hommes (18.8), Deandre Dickson (14.8) and Trey Drechsel (13.8) are all averaging double-digits in scoring per game.

SPU GAME TO BE TELEVISED BY ROOT SPORTS…the Jan. 27 home game vs. Seattle Pacific will be televised regionally by ROOT Sports and the game time has changed to a 3 pm tip-off.

CARVER GYM…the Vikings return to campus for the 2017-18 season after playing the last two seasons at Whatcom Community College due to the Carver Gym renovation…WWU is 552 -163 all-time inside Carver Gym, a .772 winning percentage…head coach Tony Dominguez has led the Vikings to a 51-6 (.895) record at Carver Gym, and a 71-13 mark in home games (.845).

HOMMES NAMED GNAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK…Daulton Hommes earned his second GNAC Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 25-31…Hommes averaged 23.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in wins at SPU and SMU, also chipping in 2.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game…Hommes also earned GNAC Player of the Week honors for Dec. 11-17 (19.0 points/game).
DRECHSEL SWEEPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK…junior guard Trey Drechsel was named the GNAC Player of the Week and the USBWA National Player of the Week after he averaged 26.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in wins over Concordia and Western Oregon to open GNAC play…Drechsel recorded career-highs with 32 points and 17 rebounds in the win over Concordia, and followed that with a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double vs. WOU…overall shot 64.5 percent (20-for-31) from the field, including a 66.7 percent (6-for-9) clip from three-point range during the week.
LOCAL CONNECTIONS…the 2017-18 Vikings roster features three players from Whatcom County in sophomore forward Daulton Hommes, junior center Logan Schilder and junior guard Leif Anderson…Hommes, a graduate of Lynden Christian High School, Schilder is a product of Bellingham High School and Whatcom Community College and Anderson joins the program after starring at Sehome High School and Whatcom CC.

COACH D…Tony Dominguez is in his 6th season at the helm of the WWU Men's Basketball program…owns a career record of 123-46 for a .728 winning percentage…coached the Vikings to a 73-27 (.730) record in GNAC play, with a pair of conference regular-season championships (2012-13 & 2016-17)…posted three consecutive 20-win seasons in his first three years as head coach, and led WWU to 15 or more wins in each of his five seasons as head coach…in 2012-13, directed Vikings to 31-3 record, GNAC regular-season championship, West Regional title and NCAA Division II Final Four…winning percentage of 91.2 established a school record and win total tied WWU mark…finalist for Clarence "Big House" Gaines National Coach of the Year honors…guided Vikings to wins in his first 24 games, an NCAA II record…2016-17 GNAC Coach of the Year.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM…Daulton Hommes and Trey Drechsel were named to the Hoops in Hawai'i Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team…Hommes averaged 25.0 points per game, including a career-high 37 points against Harding…Drechsel averaged 20.5 points/game, including 30 points in the win against Tampa, his second 30-point game of the season…Hommes was named to the All-Tournament team in each of WWU’s three preseason tournaments, the GNAC/PacWest Challenge, the Chuck Randall Classic and the Hoops in Hawai'i Holiday Classic.
PICKED TO REPEAT…GNAC coaches were selected the Vikings to repeat as league champions in the annual preseason coaches’ poll…WWU received 7 of 11 first-place votes, and a total of 116 points, ahead of second-place Western Oregon (108 points).
DEFENDING CHAMPIONS…WWU won the 2016-17 GNAC regular season and tournament titles, clinching the regular-season championship with a 17-3 league mark for the sixth GNAC title for Western, and fourth outright…the Vikings beat host Saint Martin’s (91-79) and Western Oregon (71-69) in the GNAC final to claim the first conference tournament in program history.
PRESEASON ALL-GNAC…WWU led all schools with three selections to the 2017-18 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason All-League Team…Deandre Dickson, Daulton Hommes and Trey Drechsel all earned votes from league coaches to the be listed on the 15-member team.
20+ WINS…WWU has recorded 18 seasons with 20 or more wins in program history, including 9 in the last 13 seasons (went 25-6 in 2016-17)…current string of 10 consecutive winning seasons, the 2nd-longest streak in program history (18 straight, 1959-1976)…program has recorded a 288-115 (.715) over last 14 seasons (2004-05 to 2017-18).
NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY…WWU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament eight times in program history, returning to the tournament in 2016-17 as the No. 3 seed in the West Regional…reached the NCAA Division II Elite 8 three times (2000-01, 2011-12, 2012-13) and was crowned the NCAA Division II National Champion in 2011-12…owns an all-time 17-7 (.708) record in NCAA Tournament play, winning at least one game in six of eight appearances.
2016-17 SEASON IN REVIEW…finished the 2016-17 season 25-6 overall and 17-3 in GNAC play…won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament championships…made 8th NCAA Division II Tournament appearance as the No. 3 seed in the West Regional in San Diego…returned to the national tournament for the first time since back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2011-12 (National Champions) and 2012-13…tied program record for most wins in GNAC play with the 17-1 season in 2012-13…26 overall wins were the most since back-to-back 31-win seasons in 2011-12 (National Championship Season) and 2012-13 (Final Four)…10th consecutive winning season, the second-longest streak in program history, and advanced to the postseason for the ninth consecutive season…recorded three separate 8-game winning streaks, including 8-0 start to the season…ended season winning 16 of last 19 games.
PROGRAM HISTORY…2017-18 is the 116th season in WWU Men’s Basketball history dating back to the first season was in 1903…the program boasts an all-time 1,469-1,019 record (.590)…here are some historical links and notes:
