BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University men's basketball forward Rory Blanche has been named to the Capital One Academic/NCAA Division II District 8 first team.

First-team academic all-district honorees advance to the Academic All-America Team ballot where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. District 8 is made up of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Pacific West Conference.

Blanche, a senior from Ashland, Ore. (graduate of Ashland High School), is a manufacturing engineering technology major with a 3.74 grade point average (4.0 scale).

The 6-foot-6 Blanche leads the Vikings in both points and rebounds with respective per game averages of 16.5 and 7.2. He is second in the GNAC in field-goal shooting at 59.0 percent (151-of-256), fourth in scoring, fifth in offensive rebounds (2.8) and eighth in rebounds.

Blanche, who ranks 17th among WWU career scoring leaders with 1,049 points, has scored double figures in 38 of his last 39 games.

Blanche was a second-team academic all-district pick last season.

The 18-3 and nationally No.16-ranked Vikings, who top the GNAC standings, are at Western Oregon University tonight for a GNAC contest.

Nominations and voting for the Capital One Academic All-America program are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
