BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior men’s basketball guard Taylor Stafford has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third time during the 2016-17 season.
Stafford (Chicago, IL/Evansville) averaged 23.5 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, 4.0 assists per game and 4.0 steals per game as WWU picked up wins over Western Oregon (73-63) and Concordia (87-64) to improve to 19-5 overall and 13-3 in GNAC play.
Stafford shot 53.1% (17-for-32) from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range (62.5%), and made 8-of-11 free throws (72.7%) during the week. He led the Vikings in scoring during both games, totaling 26 points,4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals against Western Oregon before scoring 21 points with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals against Concordia.
For the season, Stafford is 3rd in the GNAC in scoring average (21.9 ppg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). He also ranks 3rd in free throw percentage (87.9%, 123-for-140) as well as 4th in 3-point field goals made per game (2.6) and 8th in 3-point field goal percentage (42.2%, 62-for-147).
Stafford also earned the GNAC weekly accolade for the weeks of November 28 to December 4 and December 12 to December 19.
The Vikings continue the GNAC schedule on the road this week, facing Central Washington at 8 pm PT on Thursday and Northwest Nazarene at 7 pm MT/6 pm PT on Saturday. Thursday’s rivalry game at Central Washington will be televised live on ROOT SPORTS with Brad Adam and Francis Williams calling the action.
