WWU Men’s Basketball Weekly Report

WHAT’S HAPPENING…the No. 20 Western Washington University men’s basketball team (19-5, 13-3 GNAC) returns to the road for the final GNAC away games of the season taking on rival Central Washington on Thursday (8 pm) and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday (7 pm MT).

THE RECORD…WWU is 19-5 overall and tied for first place in the GNAC with a 13-3 record…won 10 of last 12 games…10-1 at home (7-1 GNAC) and 8-2 on the road (6-2 GNAC)…also 1-2 in neutral site games…11-1 when scoring 90 or more points in a game.

RIVALRY TV GAMES…this marks the eighth consecutive season that at least one of the WWU-CWU rivalry games have been televised regionally by ROOT SPORTS…six of the last seven TV games between the Vikings and Wildcats have been decided by 4 points or less, including 3 of last 4 in last-second shots (WWU won 2 of the games).

**Trey Drechsel started the first 16 games of the season (9.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg), but is indefinitely with a broken bone in his foot**

PUTTING UP THE POINTS…the Vikings rank 14th in the nation and lead the GNAC with a 89.2  points per game scoring offense average…scored 100+ points in 7 games this season, the most since 9 in 2005-06 (school record is 12 in 2004-05)… scored 100+ points three consecutive vs. NNU (102), CWU (100) and Simon Fraser (100)…marked the first time since the 2005-06 season to record at least three consecutive 100-point games, and the first time to post three straight 100-point games in league play since Feb. 26-March 5, 2005…current scoring average is 6th-best dating back to 1986-87 (record is 92.2).

LEADING EARLY….WWU is 14-1 when leading at the half this season…Vikings are coming off an 87-64 win over Concordia during which WWU opened a 21-4 lead en route to a 51-30 lead at the half…WWU has led by double digits at the half 8 times this season…Vikings have also shown ability to come back from halftime deficit with 4-2 record when trailing at intermission.

COACHING MILESTONE…head coach Tony Dominguez recorded his 100th victory in a come-from-behind 84-76 win at Western Oregon on Jan. 14 (now 106-42)…he became the quickest head coach in program history to reach 100 wins, recording the milestone win in his 140th game (100-40), bettering Sam Carver (145 games), Brad Jackson (147 games) and Chuck Randall (151 games).

DOMINANT DICKSON…after a knee injury kept Deandre Dickson out of the first 8 games of the season, the junior forward is averaging 13.8 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game in 15 games played (20.9 minutes/game)…Dickson has come off the bench in each game he has appeared, but has played 22 minutes or more in 8 of 15 games.

KINGMA HEAT CHECKBrett Kingma is 10-for-15 from 3-point range over his last 6 games…for the season he is 22-for-50 (44.0%) from beyond the arc.

ON THE MARK…the Vikings lead the GNAC and are 20th in NCAA Division II with a 49.8% field goal percentage (735-1476)…shot 50.0% or better in 13 of 24 games, including 7 of last 11…shooting 48.8% in GNAC play…49.8% field goal percentage is currently 6th-best by a WWU squad over the last 30 seasons (since 1986-87).

AT THE LINE…the Vikings rank 8th nationally with a 78.7% free throw percentage (444-for-564)…WWU single-season mark for FT% is 78.6% (590-751) in 2005-06…made a season-high 32 free throws (32-for-37) at Alaska Fairbanks on Feb. 4…Taylor Stafford ranks 35th nationally and 3rd in the GNAC with a 87.9% free throw percentage (123-of-140).

BEYOND THE ARC…WWU is 13th in the nation and leads the GNAC in 3-point field goal percentage, connecting on 226-of-547 (41.3%) shots…recorded at least 10 3-pointers in 13 of 24 games…Taylor Stafford (62), Jeffrey Parker (50) and Daulton Hommes (40) have combined for 152 of WWU’s 226 3-pointers (67.3%).

HISTORICAL PERFORMANCETaylor Stafford scored 44 points on 15-for-21 shooting in the Dec. 12 game at UCSD…the 44 points are 2nd-most in single-game program history, trailing only 47 points by Ryan Diggs in the NCAA West Regional vs. Humboldt State in 2006…Stafford became the 7th player (8th time) in program history to eclipse the 40-point mark, and first since John Allen in 2011 vs. Simon Fraser (43 points)…Stafford scored 29 points in the first half, tying the school record for points in a half set by Diggs in 2006…the 44-point performance is tied for the 16th-best scoring effort in NCAA Division II this season (2nd-best in the GNAC).
