BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Guard Jet Chang scored a game-high 19 points as Brigham Young University-Hawaii opened up a big lead late in the first half and went on to defeat Cal State University San Bernardino, 77-58, in a West Regional semifinal of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament being played Saturday on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the campus of host Western Washington University. BYU-Hawaii, the No.6 seed in the region, improved to 22-5 overall with its 14th straight win. Forward Marcus Whippy added 17 points for the Seasiders, who will be making their third consecutive appearance in the regional final, facing either Cal Poly Pomona or Western Washington on Monday (7p.m.). CSUSB, the No.2 seed, completed its season 23-8. Guard Corey Caston had 16 points for the Coyotes and forward Lawrence Tyson added 12. BYU-Hawaii led by just five, 27-22, with 4:19 left in the first half, but closed the period with 12 straight points, the last five by Chang, to open up a 39-22 halftime advantage. The margin was never less than 14 in the second half. The Coyotes shot just 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from the field in the first half and finished the contest at 37.9 percent (22-of-58). Guard Virgil Buensuceso had 16 points and four steals for BYU-Hawaii and center Lucas Alves added 14 points and six rebounds. |
