March 14, 2013
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University senior guard John Allen has been voted the Daktronics NCAA Division II West Region Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Year. Senior forward Paul Jones joined Allen as a Daktronics first-team all-West Region member. Allen, a senior from Brier (Mountlake Terrace High School) is averaging team-highs of 17.3 points and 4.0 assists this season, and earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors as the 27-2 Vikings claimed the GNAC regular-season title. He is the first Viking to claim regional Player of the Year honors since Grant Dykstra in 2005. "This is a well-deserved honor for John and one he should be very proud of," said WWU coach Tony Dominguez. "John worked hard in the off-season. He's become better at the defensive end this season, and he has worked hard at leading the team." Jones, a senior from Kent (Kent-Meridian High School), is averaging 14.8 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting a GNAC-leading 59.2 percent from the field. "I'm very happy for Paul," Dominguez said. "He has bided his time for this opportunity. He's a complete player, who scores in multiple ways and works very hard on defense." WWU, ranked No.4 nationally in this week's USA Today Sports/ESPN NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, earned the No.1 seed and the right to host the West Regional of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The Vikings open the regional against Chaminade HI on Friday (7:30 p.m.). Joining Allen and Jones on the all-West Region first team were Cal Poly Pomona guard Mitchell Anderson, Seattle Pacific guard David Downs and forward Kwame Alexander of Cal State San Bernardino. Anderson and Alexander earned second-team honors last season. Selected to the second team were guards DeAndre Haskins of Chaminade, Mark McLaughlin of Central Washington, Terrence Drisdom of Cal Poly Pomona, Brian Goins of Cal State San Bernardino, forward Decensae White of San Francisco State and center Zach Robbins of Dixie State.
