BELLINGHAM, Wash, - A crowd of around 700 turned out Thursday afternoon to celebrate the NCAA Division II national championship won by the Western Washington University men's basketball team. The event took place at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

WWU President Bruce Shepard, Bellingham Mayor Kelli Linville and WWU Associated Students Vice President for Student Life Sara Richards had cogratulatory messages. The team and coaches were introduced, and team captain Rory Blanche and head coach Brad Jackson spoke.

The event ended with a video tribute prepared by Robert B. Clark and Aaron Rosenberg and there was an autograph session.

The Vikings became just the second collegiate men's basketball team in the state of Washington to capture a national title, and the first in 36 years, with a 72-65 win over Montevallo (Ala.) on March 24 at Highland Heights, Ky. Their win total of 31 was a school record.
